2) read Adobe DRM ePub productively with a web browser, specifically Kindle3's

This would let you check out a library book on your computer and then upload to your bookshelf, where Kindle could read it.

There are already at least a couple of sites where you can do 1), but none that I've come across also have a web ebook viewer than can handle DRM. Google books has a web ebook viewer than handles DRM material, and that sort of works on Kindle3, but you can't upload your own books.

I think a solution is likely to be available in some form this year as browser-based reading becomes more popular (Amazon having announced theirs, for example) and Chrome OS devices start to dribble out.

If Overdrive wanted to they could create a web site that allowed browser based reading of checked out material. Then possibly Kindle owners could take advantage of this.

I solved this problem (and others) by getting an iPod Touch. It works great.

If you like reading on a small LCD screen it would work great.

I don't so that is not a solution for me.

I am looking forward to some nice 7 inch android tablets. The Galaxy looks nice but is way too expensive. Heck, I think the ITouch is too expensive for what it is. But that is me. I don't need the functionality that it provides so it strikes me as too expensive. For folks who need that functioanlity (My Dad) it is great.

The is already an epub add-on for Firefox. I don't believe it will work for drm-ed epub.

OK I have Calibre and plugins installed, yippie. I will keep following the directions on the blog. I simply want to learn, not pirate files.

If I were into the pirate P2P thing then why bother buying books from Amazon. LOL

Before Sony added ADE/ePub to the 505, they wanted to add Mobipocket. But to add Mobipocket, Sony would have to have dropped LRX support and they were not going to do so. I agree that Amazon has been pretty clear that they aren't interested in having DRD'd Mobi put on a bunch of competing products, but I don't know if I'd call it a downfall.

I would. Do you see new eBooks sold in Mobipocket outside of Amazon and AZW? Most libraries no longer buy Mobipocket. If Amazon had allowed Mobipocket on the 505, that would have kept the format alive and ePub may not have become the defacto standard like it is today.

Have you tried calibre? It's an open source (free) program that is supposed to convert EPUB and other formats to be read on Kindle 2 and DX. I'm trying to find out if it also works for Kindle3, which I want to buy, but only if I can download UPUB files from our library. Anyone know whether calibre supports Kindle3?

15% of the (US) market does not make ePub the defacto standard. IMO.

I'm curious about Sony and mobipocket, though - did they ask for mobipocket support at one time?

Calibre does support Kindle3 (k3) BUT..... Library Epub books have drm coding/encryption and Calibre needs some help from tools called plug-ins. You also need to actually download those epubs from the library into a epub reader program and then Calibre can work on them. To find out more, Google Apprentice Alf and within the blog search for "tools"

While it may sound complex, actually, once you've set it up and done it once, it becomes pretty transparent. I've done the same, taking advantage of freebies from Barnes and Noble epub books (although you do need to setup and account).

Calibre definitely supports the K3...if you want to read epub library books, you will need to install into Calibre a plug-in that will strip the DRM when it converts to MOBI. This plug-in can be found if you google Apprentice Alf's Blog and search on Calibre plug-ins. Whether you are comfortable doing this is up to you, but it is very straight forward to accomplish.

Where do you get this ridiculous 15%? It's a bit more then 15% in the US. Plus, take into account the rest of the world and it's more then 50%.

Yes, Sony wanted to use Mobipocket but were turned down. So they went to Adobe for ADE/ePub. That was the start of ePub's becoming the defacto worldwide standard.
