I think wireless just needs to be on if you want to be sent the little page files without re-downloading the book again... Once you have them, you're good to go, and can disconnect.

Like doing a sync to getting the little .mbp file of last page read data if you read the book on another device...

I just checked this. Before, the Kindle would show the location range for the content currently being displayed, and at the right of the progress bar display the total locations for the book. With update 3.1 installed, when you press the MENU button it now displays "Location X of Y" where X is the current location (presumably of the first word on the current page) and Y is the total number of locations in the book.

I just ran a quick test to check this.

One of the books I already had on my Kindle turned out to have page numbers. So I deleted it from the Kindle and switched wireless off. Plugged in USB to check that none of the files relating to that book remained, then downloaded the book to my PC - got a single .azw file. Side loaded that onto the Kindle, then disconnected it from the PC, and opened the book - no page numbers. Opened and closed the book a couple of times, but no page numbers showed up. So I turned on the wireless connection, and synched the Kindle with Amazon, then opened the book again - page numbers appeared.

So... the page number info is entirely contained in the .apnx file, and the only way to get that file appears to be by synching the Kindle using wireless. If you just load the .azw file, and keep wireless switched off, no page numbers.

Has anyone tried with the new version of K4PC? (I'm still on 1.0.1 or such) I saw someone here say a new version came out yesterday - not sure if it's the update Amazon said would support page numbers.

I'm wondering, because I read that the apnx file works with mobis, so I wonder if you could do it that way... take the apnx file from the K4pc download and rename it to match the kindle's azw file or a mobi version of it...

It grabs the .apnx file but I can't get it to display or go to specific pages in K4PC 1.4.1 (31629) which is what it just updated to.

Hmmm... interesting!

I just downloaded and installed the latest version of K4PC, then went to the "Manage my Kindle" page and downloaded the same book I used for the previous test, this time to the K4PC app.

When I opened the book, K4PC isn't showing page numbers, but when I checked on my hard drive, the .apnx file is there.

So... I deleted the book again from my Kindle, switched wireless off, side loaded the .azw file again, copied the .apnx file from the K4PC content directory, renamed it to match the file name of the .azw file, then side loaded the renamed .apnx file onto the Kindle. Unplugged the Kindle from USB and opened the book, and the page numbers show up fine.

So for those who can't or prefer not to fire up the wireless connection on their Kindle, this might be an alternative route to getting the page number file. Good thinking Piper!

Make sure you have the latest K4PC update (Help/About Kindle for PC should report 1.4.1 (31629)). Also make sure you navigate to the first page (front matter won't have page numbers).

Of 80 books I have downloaded from Amazon, 31 have page numbers (based on counting .apnx files).

From one of the update notes:
Turning Public Notes on or off from your device will not make your notes visible. You have to turn on Public Notes for a book through our website before anyone else can see your highlights and notes in that book.
