When I was a kid they still taught something resembling culture and we got to see numerous shows performed live...like, on a stage. Of course there was also the '70s/'80s Disney stuff. I will never forget, however, going to a theater in Chicago for my first "Rocky" experience with the audience partici--pation complete with toast, rice, and squirt guns (no, I didn't dress up).

Years ago I worked in a nursing home with people with dementia, 'The Sound of Music' was always on... Some of the elderly ladies would whisper to one and other: 'I think I've seen this one before' - and they would have.... several time a day, but they loved it!

Having played in the orchestra pit for a lot of musicals I would have to say I enjoyed the music in Guys & Dolls. Rocky Horror was also a laugh. You get a whole different perspective playing the stuff over and over night after night, even the best show can become totally boring.

That would be 42nd Street, on Broadway, not the film ('tho related). It really used to steam visitors who came to town who wanted to see "A Chorus Line," 'cause they'd heard the album, seen the road company, whatever, and decided that was what they wanted. When I forced them to come see 42nd Street, I always said, "That's not a chorus line. This is a chorus line! Wow, compared to one full-dress production number by maybe 12 dancers, try 15 numbers, by dozens of dancers. I still remember the first time hearing the strains of "We're In the Money" and wondering, will they do the part with the dimes? Did they ever, and that was only the beginning! No neon violins for the "Shadow Waltz," though. That was the only disappointment. The massive pounding of all those tapping feet, live! mmm mmm Last edited by CO'Neil; 02-06-2011 at 09:07 AM. My favorites are "My Fair Lady", "Man of La Mancha", and "42nd Street". Those are the ones whose songs I always find myself singing, throughout my life. Last edited by Xanthe; 02-06-2011 at 05:04 PM. |

We had a great chorus teacher in high school, so we sang music from Oliver, Hair, Man of La Mancha and Fiddler on the Roof to name just a few. It is amazing how lyrics will stick with you for so many years. (I sing "Little Bird" from Man of La Mancha to my mother's cockatiel. He loves it. )
