Question Author sort

How can I get the field Author sort to accept as valid "Vargas Llosa, Mario" instead of "Llosa, Mario Vargas" - as it suggests - when the author's name is "Mario Vargas Llosa"?

Name: Mario
Surname 1: Vargas
Surname 2: Llosa

Many thanks

It will accept it as valid; it just won't offer it to you as the default. You'll need to go in and edit the metadata after adding the book.

Thanks, Harry

It accepts it, but I have to enter it manually. Clicking on the little arrow will insert "Llosa, Mario Vargas".

I was wondering if there is a tweak to force these names to use first the two last names, a comma and first name. This naming is very common especially in Spanish or Latin American authors: Gabriel García Márquez, Carlos Ruiz Zafón, Guillermo Cabrera Infante, et al.

Use the Right click option on the Authors Name, in the Tag Browser .
That fixes that author, every use (as long as 1 book remains in the Library)

As theducks says that would change the default sorting for the author as long as there are books by him/her in the library.
I wonder though if these settings could be saved permanently because right now I have to re-sort an author everytime it is added again (new) to the library.
It would be nice for calibre to store (i.ex) that "Mario Vargas Llosa" is "LLosa Vargas, Mario" even if momentarily there are no books of him in the library.

My user scenario is that I don't have the full library on calibre. I add a bunch of books, convert & synchro to Kindle and later on I delete the books from library and load a new set of books. So I always lose all the author sortings arrangements made before.

That's a very cool tip.

Many thanks, theducks

EDIT: And I think that solves my issue. Now, when I click in the arrow, the Author Sort field is populated with the right values and its backround color is green

Instead of deleting the books from the library, couldn't you make an alternate library with non-current books? That's how I have it by the time being.
  • Library A - Books currently reading and to read soon
  • Library B - All other books

As long as there are books...
The reason I said this. If you make the change to the Author sort IN TAGS BROWSER,
that makes a change in the 'Authors' information, Not the 'Books' information.

No books with that Author! Calibre cleans up unused names: <bins, your change>
Since I only ADD books (and cull out duplicates), My Author list never gets shorter and my sort edits stick around.
