Yes, the new models can read LRF but not LRX. You should be able to redownload your previous Sony Reader Store purchases in EPUB by visiting your account page in the Reader Library software. However, Sony hasn't converted their entire library yet. I still have some that I can't download and they say Available Soon. That's why I keep my 505 around.

As LatinandGreek and astra already said, LRF can still be read on the new Readers and LRX from Sony can be re-downloaded as epubs for free.

Thanks for the input everyone! I think I am going to upgrade if I can squeeze the money out of my holiday shopping budget.

A little more on the 505 to 650 upgrade path… I had been following the new pearl screens on the Kindle 3 for awhile, mostly by seeing the comparison shots online… Well the Pearl screen did look better. But not really trusting the online shots I made my way to a Sony Style store and brought along my 505 to do a side by side comparison. I came away thinking that the 505 held it’s own to the new 650 screen. The upgrade could wait… As the S.Crow song says, “It’s not having what you want. It’s wanting what you’ve got”… But alas I caved, when I first fired up the 650 in my reading environment, with my reading light and not in a store with odd-ball lighting I was astounded at the difference. I sometimes I am surprised to read on various posts that folks don’t think that there is much of a difference… E-Ink screens are reflective and the light source that is used to read by makes a huge difference. I can honestly say that the 650 Pearl screen is very close to being paper like. And again the light that you read by makes a big difference… In my case I use a LED light in a fixture that shapes the light to the screen...And comparing the 505 to the 650 in this controlled environment… Well, night and day.
