It's also possible that Sony discounts the product deeply to US retailers -- and with a deep discount, Sony would demand something like a "no returns unless defective" policy on units, which would motivate the retailers to sell off old stock. |

The new Sonys (350 & 650) have been in the Sony Rewards catalog fairly soon after they were announced, but still say "Temporarily Out of Stock"! Argh! I've been saving my Sony Rewards points for the sole purpose of putting them toward the 650, but I'm growing impatient. Why even list them in the Rewards catalog if they aren't available yet????

Okay, I'm taking a deep breath and letting it out. I'm normally a very patient person, but since I saw them in person at Borders my excitement level has skyrocketed and my patience has taken a dive! |

Around here there are no Sony's on display. BB had some 350s in boxes, but no 650s or any Sony display when I last looked. We have no Borders, or Sony stores. So we're up a creek.

I didn't need a new one, anyway. I just wanted to look at them. I haven't even been able to see the new screens yet. |

Actually, Sony is doing a BETTER job of selling their product. They have fully working demos at Borders and Best Buy. Kindle has a demo that flashes pages advertising the product and its capabilities.

And yeah, even Freddies carries them (I think I only saw the 350). |

To stir up yet another conspiracy theory: every time I hear news about "walkman", it's about tape devices. And that's despite the fact that Sony makes excellent mp3 walkman.

In this case, however, x50 models are simply out of stock.

				Yeah, it's pretty awful . . .

I live in Reading, Pa. NONE of the local shops carry the 350. I had to drive into King of Prussia (a Philadelphia suburb) and go to a Sony store just to see one!

Why are they hiding the new models? |

I haven't checked our local Sony store, but pretty much every town center here in the UK has a waterstones, and every one I've been in has the 350/650 on display and working.

Thats what clinched it for me - being able to play with it was crutial to get a feel for the device, rather than going on faith that reviews of the Kindle were accurate. Nothing beats the reality of looking/playing/holding the device. |

Sony's product management has always been lacking. Sony has had some great innovations. (Betamax was way better than vhs.)

Sony has a great reader but is in competition with some shrewd adversies. I am encouraged because of some of the supported formats. I hope that the stores are well stocked and marketing is heavy during the Christmas shopping season. Too bad there is not already a buzz in the general TV watching population. Although I have a face that is great for radio, I would love to be one of the very satisfied customers who pitches their new readers. |

Well I have the prs-500 and now win7 64 bit and says I need a firmware update, which when I go to sony's sight, I get nothing but errors there.. I am really wondering if I can still transfer normal books or free books txt format or something simple to the reader with out this firmware update which needs to be *sent in* to be fixed. Truly thinking of just dumping it and getting a kindle................ and I don't want to try and see if I could transfer something, might mess it up. I don't know. Just curious if anyone has the old dinosauar with win7 and has done this.

Just use drag'n'drop in Explorer (right-click start)... drag books from your hard drive to the Sony which should show as a removable disk drive when plugged in to the computer... this will work fine with free books (as long as they aren't ePubs)

doesn't work. I just tried it with a rtf file. I get no action whatsoever. Of course it appears the sony batter was close to dead or died when I did this, so it must be getting old too, I just recharged the thing but never went to read on it. Charging it now and will try again later, but I have a feeling I am out to lunch. Glad I have a reader on the computer so I can read my books which generally is what I have been doing anyway.. but I did, i got the book into the connect software then dragged it down to the computer icon in the software and nothing happened. It didn't see it.

What connect software??? I was talking of using the normal file transfer facilities of Windows (no Sony or anyone else's software)... if unfamiliar with using Explorer for file transfer, ask someone to show you

the connect software that is used to purchase books! where you can also put the books into the connect software and then transfer to the book as I have always done. I know how to use a computer but I do not see how I can transfer from the computer to the reader other than via the chord and reader and software, and I don't use the little cards either. And there is nobody here at home that can show me this, LOL.

The computer is not recognizing the sony chord either when I plug it in. Last edited by Aprilbeginnings; 11-03-2010 at 01:37 PM. |

""" This software does not work on the 64-bit versions of Windows XP. 64-bit Windows Vista and Windows 7 is supported since Sony eBook Library version 2.5.00.09170 for all but the 500 models.[13]"""" what I figured. so now trying to figure out how to get it to see a memory card since i have never used one... and search isn't helping me much but then again, never did good with those either. haha.
