Is anyone interested in making a copy of Manna by Lee Correy? I would appreciate a copy in Mobi/PRC. That old Daws font seems to get smaller as the years go by.

I don't think that book is copyright-free. Please don't ask for copyrighted works here.

My apologies. The English translation of "We" by Yevgeny Zamyatin, originally published in English in 1924 by Gregory Zilboorg is not currently in the public domain (in the United States). It may be public domain in other countries.

It is, however, a really good book. Go read it. ![]() Wikipedia Entry Last edited by namebrandon; 08-16-2010 at 11:43 AM. |

What was the date of the English translator's death? That's what determines whether or not it's in the public domain. A translation has its own copyright, independent of that of the original author, so in most countries, a work will be protected by copyright until the start of the year following the 70th anniversary of the translator's death (in Canada, it's the 50th anniversary).

Here's the link to the Stanford Copyright Renewal Page http://collections.stanford.edu/copy...eID=1324645412 Title We; authorized translation by Gregory Zilboorg Author ZAMIATIN, EVGENII IVANOVICH Registration Date 22Dec24 Renewal Date 22Oct52 From my quick research (USA related), it looks like the copyright is still valid 95 years from the publication date of 1924 (since it was published after 1923, and renewed). Guess I'll add it to my calendar's to-do list for Dec 22, 2019.

Note that what is "public domain" varies between countries. In Canada, where the main MobileRead server is located, it is the year of the author's/translator's death that counts, not the date of publication.

Since the author (Yevgeny Zamyatin) died 73 years ago, and the translator in (Gregory Zilboorg) 51 years ago, the English translation should be public domain in Canada (since the 1st January 2010). The "copyright renewal" thing is only for the US. |

Very good point, and I've edited my original post to reflect that.

For those of you for whom it is in the public domain, you may want to request it be uploaded. Assuming you enjoy dystopian science fiction, it's a very good read! Similar to Brave New World, or even 1984 to some extent. |

[QUOTE=seagull;1207446]but I can't seem to be able to find all the footnotes that the text(s) reference. Can someone please tell me if it's my dodgy brain or a dodgy PG text?

In the first volume, you have the notes for each story in another section after the story itself. For instance, after "THE MYSTERY OF MARIE ROGET" there's "FOOTNOTES—Marie Rogêt". |
