Every locale has different requirements. Every lifestyle presents different types of emergencies. Your lifestyle probably never required you to carry an attache case (for shark protection) when scuba diving. The sharks think we're lawyers and leave us alone out of professional courtesy. Hang in there, Astra! Nothing expresses the joy of life more than surviving a disaster! What you need is an Italian invasion again. Lets make Beppe emperor and ask him to get your blood pumping once more with a nice invasion. Seriously though, with the UK financial troubles you do need a personal safety cushion. As I said elsewhere I slowly accumulated 6 months of food and medicine. In August I had to have surgery to reattach a tendon on the top of my right foot. They then had to cut my Achilles tendon and insert a spacer to relax the tension so that the other tendon wouldn't be pulled off again. I was told that the full recovery would take about 6 months. Because I had some money, food, and common medicines saved up I do not have an emergency. If I had not thought ahead I could have lost my house. Some use Preparation to insure themselves against earthquakes, flood, ice storms, blizzards, zombie attacks, or whatever. Far from being depressing, I see it as a form of self respect and determination. I WILL survive! Suppose something like that Stephen King story was to happen in the UK? The one about monsters in the fog and people trapped in a small market. Without your own supply of food, medicine, and machine guns you would have to try to make it to that sorry excuse for a grocery store. Or what happens when all the illegal realize that the UK can not only not protect their sovereignty, but that they can't even afford to ship them out of the country? Your ancestors beat my ancestors once. If you can't do it again I'll pull a Braveheart on you and Scotland WILL BE FREE!!!!! Uhm, wait a minuet. I don't think that I like the way that William Wallace thingie ended. I'll just stay over here if you don't mind. |

After Hurricane Katrina, one of the things I ended up doing at work was helping Soldiers re-create documents that were lost in the aftermath of the storm, specifically college transcripts. (Several schools suffered very heavy damage.) It's a good idea to scan all of your important documents and keep a copy on a flash drive or something that you can put in your emergency pack if you have to evacuate for some reason. I don't assume anymore that I'll be able to get additional copies of any documents that are lost -- this is another area where redundancy is a good thing.

Household Emergency Plan checklist (linked from page http://www.emergency.qld.gov.au/emq/...seholdplan.asp) Household Evacuation information and Evacuation Kit checklist (linked from page http://www.emergency.qld.gov.au/emq/...acplanning.asp) Household Emergency Kit checklist (linked from page http://www.emergency.qld.gov.au/emq/...ergencykit.asp) Prepared Home Checklist (linked from page http://www.emergency.qld.gov.au/emq/css/preparehome.asp) Some of the above might all be combined under the SES (State Emergency Service) Get Ready Guide (<---PDF linky) but I haven't fully checked that out yet. The Be Prepared page specifies four major emergencies (all of the below are linkies): We're on high ground. I'm going to have to look up some stuff on bushfire (we're in the bushfire zone...as well as the landslip zone, FWIW) and also, of course, the Prepare Your Pets (<---linky) bit. Cheers, Marc

Let's suppose that's not going to happen, I want to sleep at night. I reckon this is all a bit alarmist, the UK is highly unlikely to suffer catastrophic geological/meteoroligical/socio-economic disasters in my lifetime. And if it did, 6 months of food would just delay the inevitable. "The chances of anything coming from a Mars are a million to one he said ...."

"It is an offence for any person, without lawful authority or good reason, to have with him in a public place, any article which has a blade or is sharply pointed except for a folding pocket-knife which has a cutting edge to its blade not exceeding 3 inches." [CJA 1988 section 139(1)] The phrase "good reason" is intended to allow for "common sense" possession of knives, so that it is legal to carry a knife if there is a bona fide reason to do so. Examples of bona fide reasons which have been accepted include: a knife required for ones trade (e.g. a chefs knife), as part of a national costume (e.g. a sgian dubh), or for religious reasons (e.g. a Sikh Kirpan).
