				The origin of sexuality?

Mutation Over 100 Million Years Ago Led Flowers to Make Male and Female Parts Differently ScienceDaily (Oct. 18, 2010) — Research by University of Leeds plant scientists has uncovered a snapshot of evolution in progress, by tracing how a gene mutation over 100 million years ago led flowers to make male and female parts in different ways..... http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases...1018163100.htm |

Oh, thank the Gods... something for me to think about instead of DRM! Though the article's title suggests sexuality as a central subject, this is really about how mutation causes genetic changes of any sort. Interestingly, it falls short of outright suggesting that this mechanism works for anything besides plants... like animals, and by extension, their sexual traits. Still, if they want to talk about sex, I'll be more than happy to oblige! |

Well, I think the study is hoping that it will further reveal the evolutionary steps towards sexual reproduction. |

A hundred million years? I thought it was more like three tousand million years that bisexual reproduction evolved.

Three thousand million = 3 Billion years ago. Only prokaryotes were around at that time. But flowers are actually a fairly "new" phenomenon. Sexuality existed long before the flowers learned how to do it.
