DRM in kindle
I got Kindle for PC and have downloaded some ebooks (mostly free books). My question is if there is an easy way (like looking the file extension) to know if a book has DRM.

I think the extension for all Kindle for PC books is now AZW. You can always just run all your books through a dedrm script. It'll either find a PID or it won't.

Hi,

try to open the book with the viewer from calibre. If it fail, the book is DRMed.

No.

Other than .azw, of course, which almost always have DRM.

You're welcome.

On the other hand, if you're willing to take the previous two posters' advice, you can sometimes puzzle it out. It's complicated.

Import them to Calibre. Hit "view" If its drm'd, you'll know right away.

If it opens, your clear.

Indeed. Formats differ in a matter of closing user in. Epub is
open format and could be configured in various ways. Even
without any software, since it is html in a container. People
like calibre and sigil and I would say it is for good reason. The
very question is drm. Attempt to control end user went too
far, for my taste.
