Inexpensive alternative to 350 cover
I'm sure most will not like this, but here is what I did for a cover. Rather than pay $35 sight unseen for a new cover, I picked up a 300 black Sony cover. Best Buy has them on liquidation for $9.99. I simply removed the spline attachment used to hold the 300 in place and used double back tape (or you could use velcro) to secure the 350 into the case. Sure the cover is a bit big, but it still looks nice and functions very well. I'm able to hold and use the 350 a lot better than without a cover.
BTW, I almost ordered a 350 cover from Sony, but after looking at the photos of the ugly pink one I could see the design looked cheap and thin compared to the sturdy and quality built 300 covers. See photos attached: .... Last edited by jswinden; 09-19-2010 at 06:03 PM. |

Great idea. I'm always looking for cheap cover ideas. Do you find the 350 stable? Any chance of it falling out? Maybe you could add something in the corners, some kind of elastic or ribbon, to make the unit a bit more stable.

It is very stable and doesn't move about. I did this with another reader I had last year (Aluratek Libre which I attached to a Sony 300 cover) and it actually took a lot of pressure to get the tape to release.

Not wanting to ruin the extreme advantage of the size and weight (i.e. lack of both), I am waiting for a thin silicone skin to come out for the 350, and no longer interested in "book like" leather covers, like I had on my 505.
I know it's only a matter of time, but no one has one out yet. Anyone know of one that I haven't yet found? |

Just to put the other side, I've bought the official Sony PRS-650 case, and I really like it--black leather, fits well, and folds back double for reading. It also has the slight magnetic grip of the PRS-505 case too.
Not exactly cheap, but I am please with it. |

I too have bit too large cover. I'm not sure how you used the tape so that the reader was secure. Please explain. Also, I could velcro it in, but that will mean the velcro is permantely on the reader.

The 350 is about a half inch shorter than the 300 so it doesn't fit the attachments at all.

Great idea.
I have to say, though, that the two-material Sony covers for the 350 are great quality IMO. I have the pink and I really like it, especially the way it folds back. |

I decided not to use a Sony 300 cover for my 350. I went the velco route. True, I won't be able to sell my ereader, but I don't think I'll ever want to.

Velcro is removable. You will have to be easy when you remove it as the 350 is not as sturdy as the 300 was, but it can be removed. Then use a tiny bit of mineral spirits (paint thinner) to get rid of the remaining stickyness. Then a teensy bit of machine oil to restore the luster the mineral spirits takes away.

do you find it 'heavy'? does it mess up the lightweight advantage of the 650?

Its a 350 not a 650, but the cover doesn't bother me at all weight-wise. I'm not sure why people are so concerned about adding the weight of a cover. To me the 350 is way to thin to comfortably hold naked. Adding a cover makes it much easier to hold and the extra weight is not an issue. It is still much lighter than my K3 with cover, and that is easy to hold and no issue with weight there either.
