String theory. If you get Science Channel. Look for a show by Dr. Kaku. he is a theoretical physicist. The show is SF Science. He has discussed light sabers, time machines, 'blaster's, etc. He talks to sf fans at a convention, works on the idea, then does a show and tell on how it is possible or not possible with present day technology. |

And I'm not saying it's just him, but the way the producers put together the shows he is on. Or it might be the pretentious black suits. SF Rule: Wearing all-black always indicates either evil, or pretentiousness.

Yeah, he seems a bit rushed. From what little I know about physics, most of those subjects simply cannot be discussed in an hour. I do find it interesting though. |

I personally don't care how FTL works or if it is even possible. The author needs to explain such things if a major plot turn relys on it, but if it is merely a conveyance to get the characters to where the action is, I feel distracted by that sort of explanation. Do we REALLY care how Grantville, W Virginia winds up up in medieval Germany?

IMHO, doesn't matter what genre you are writing in, if I don't care about the characters and what is happening to them, I don't care about the book. My favorite "horror" author, Stephen King (so classified though much of his stuff is not horror) makes me care so much about the characters that if one stubs a toe hard it wracks my sympathy bone. They feel like real people. There's another author writing in the same genre whose name I will not mention. I cared so little about his characters that I found I was inclined to cheer when the monster ate them. At that point I stopped reading his books. All the bells and whistles and science in the world won't save a science fiction book for me, if the characters aren't real people - even the alien ones. Even the nasty ones - I have to be able to relate to them somehow, or I dump the book. Robin |
