Unfortunately, it's not something a national government can do anything about. It's an EU Directive, and all member states have to obey it.

They can work towards changing that directive, no?

True, but I don't think they'd stand much chance of success, unfortunately.

To go up against EU bureaucracy you need lots of money, hire a couple of lobbyists to run the case and a hole lot of patience. EU is a money eating machine.

If your kommune's bibliotek subscribes to elib or ebib you can get ebooks for nothing (apart from the 40% tax that we all pay!), for either 8 days or 30 days. With ebook prices in DK being what they are I would hope as time goes on that public libraries will really get into ebook lending.

Except that ebib.dk doesn't have that much of a selection of fiction for adults... I assume it will get better - I hope - with book prices being what they are here.

On the 21st of October the pilot project that's been going on for a year in Norway/Drammen will go from beta to live. I'm not so sure what took them so long since it seems like they're going for the same solution like e-lib in Sweden but I'm glad things are finally starting to happen.

I'm thinking they've been stalling. There's no strong forces to get it in place. Quite the opposite. The publishing industry has probably been lobbying against it from the get go.

And here we can see how reluctantly Gyldendal acts around it. They're dipping their toes and finding the water very cold... So to speak They do need to build up a larger base of works for sale. That's the typical question I get when I show someone my ebook reader; what books can you get for it? |

If you look at the attached photo of the advert, it says "epub, txt, html and pdf (no DRM)".
