Where he around today Karl Marx might have said "Sports.... is the opiate of the people".

I can't see kids practicing with a skateboard or bouncing a basketball for hours, without thinking of people restocking the shelves in a grocery store of sweeping the floor in a McDonalds.

Healthy entertainment? Yes. But a means to better their future? No.

There is a culture of futility, of willful ignorance, that seems rampant.

I don't know how teachers can stand it. To be in a classroom where only a few want to learn, and the others want to disrupt.

I've been in schools where the very young are bright eyed and want to learn. I've been in others where the older students remind me of the child solders you sometimes see on TV. Cold hostile eyes staring at you.

To the teachers out there - Good luck and thank you. I could never do what you do.

And I wonder how much of that is the result of never having been taught, and how much is because every waking hour outside of school hours is spent in search of pleasure and entertainment.

Our society as a whole has shifted, and a few hours in school canʻt always counteract what children spend every other minute doing, and if we donʻt have their attention or respect during the actual time spent in school, itʻs a wash. Whose fault would that be, really? (A serious thought)

I think all western countries struggle with a higher rate of unmotivated students. In some parts because the young growing up today doesn't have to struggle for anything. You don't see kids in Africa complaining about going to school, instead you see students eager and willing to learn.

Some years back I was having lunch in a McDonalds (yeah, I'll eat anything).

There weren't very many people inside. Down a little ways from me was a woman and her child, the child maybe 8 or 9. The child finishes most of his food, gets up on the table, and starts walking from one table to another. The mother continues to eat.

Teachers can't teach children who have absolutely NO discipline. And the parents think that discipline is bad for the children. Thank you Dr. Spock.

I actually liked school. My 9th grade science teacher left because of the kids in my class. And I'm screaming inside my head for them to shut up.

In which house do you think that a child learns to behave? USA? Or Kenya where the literacy rate is one of the highest in Africa.

How about literacy in the USA (#33) and Korea (#1)

Math
USA (#27) or New Zealand (#7)

We pay millions to top managers, businessmen and entertainers (and organized sports is entertainment, don't ever think otherwise), and we're busy trying to eliminate as many technical jobs as possible, in the name of efficiency.

So for the average OEDC kid, just what good is education going to do them? IT's not a ticket to much of anything, any more.

It is depressing, isn't it. Most have no goals, and no incentive. The only jobs without any significant education will be low paying partime jobs.

Blame the cause of your problems on the black guy, the white guy, the hispanic guy, the ....

This doesn't really belong here. But -
Teachers, are there ANY workable solutions out there? If so please let us know and start a new thread.

That reminds me of an incident that happened to me about 16 years ago in a Famous Recipe chicken joint (Think of McDonalds without the charm, but with fried chicken). This little kid, maybe three, was behaving like a little ass. He was getting on everyone's nerves. His mother pointed to me and said, "If you don't behave, that man is going to spank you!"

I was dumbfounded! And the first thing out of my mouth was, "No I won't!"

The 'mom' said, "Well thanks for interfering with how I discipline my child!"

Now I was pissed! "You aren't disciplining a child! You are threatening him with violence from strangers! If your kid needs a spanking, And he does, then he should get it from mom!"

I've often wondered when that kid will get out of prison, or if he is in for good.

It seems like everyone is shirking their responsibilities any more.

Yeah, I used know a male stripper in a kind of low rent review. The ladies in his clientelle, were cheap, and instead of stuffing ten dollar bills in the guy's briefs, they'd use quarters. By the end of the set, the weight of the coins made mere movement difficult and a decent grind virtually impossible.

Good for you! I agree about the parental responsibilities in particular...not only are teachers expected to teach the children their subjects, but are expected to provide discipline and baby sit them and ...
