My reasons are basically all of the above. But Alex's personality and knowledge were the big reason in the beginning for me. Now I definitely read a lot more because of MR and e-books and greatly enjoy both.

I stayed because of all the wonderful people who treated me like family from day one. And the security here stinks, so stalking is easy. |

Minds? As in, more than one? I thought we shared one mind? Why didn't I get that memo? No wonder the voices went away, I'm not connected to the hive anymore!!!

Firstly (is that a word?), Neilmarr, thanks for asking! WHY DO YOU POST AT MOBILEREAD? (even if you shouted it in caps ...).

I come to learn and hang out with other folks who truly love to read and who care about the e-reader environment / ecosystem which makes it possible / will contribute to its future. I come to share insights, longings, hopes and fears about e-reading, today and into the future, and hope to influence where our world is going: defined by consumer need ahead of gadget dazzle. I come here to share my energy and ethusiasm for writers long passed from this earth whose words continue to inspire (and to that end I sometimes contribute custom PD e-books by Isham, Footner, Chandler). I come here to discover new writers (to me) -- living and dead -- and share my discoveries with others (esp. see this thread, Any Crime Fiction Fans? https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=48511). I come here to share my expertise in business, tech and things consumer, adding context to sometimes complex or emotional "discussions". I come here because it feels like "home": a like-minded out-cropping of folks of diverse backgrounds, geographies, demographics who happen to share a love of the uniquely human (as far as we know to date) passion for words and their power to create worlds and emotions in one's imagination out of all proportion to the physical page, electronic or otherwise. I come here to inspire, to be inspired, and to celebrate my fellow authors, readers and the permanance of words (one nods to the Sumerian tale the Epic of Gilgamesh) as an expression of our collective humanity. And, oh, heck: the jostling over opinion and fact and fiction about e-readers and e-books is endlessly entertaining and good clean FUN! More succinctly as Rich_D says: Kindred spirits. As jgaiser says: discovered it when I got my Kindle 2 (for me, Nov 21, 2009). As foreverjuly says: I've been impressed by the community here. Or lastblade: The alternative is unbearable. And lastly because I have a special place in my heart for a tartan endowed man in a kilt who asks curiously open-ended questions. Thank you, Neilmarr.

Dear Neil: you summed it nearly perfectly up:

After being the best purchase decision helper, I've ever seen on the net (as far as e-ink devices are concerned), MR remains best info point about developmentand usage of e-book related tools and on-device software ( 2 Valloric, Kovid, and all others of you who help making the gap between a theoretical standard and practical usage smaller with each day, be it as tool-coders or content making wizards and helpers)this alone would be reason enough to stay - but there are fellow:
the welcome here (your part in it included) was very heartily and warm. Its like some kind of never ending book convention and that feels damn good to me. so I'd rather ask your question the other way around: What the hell makes people leave this place volountarily?!? - I'm serious about that. *ahm* *cough* in addition to all that I'll freely admit, that I also - among a fair big bunch of others here - am far from being immune to the natural kindness and charme of Our Royal Zippyness the Queen. I don't really know why I came to MR., and it doesn't matter.

It's like the first day in school for young children. Kids everywhere. Some I like right away. Some I like the longer I know them. And then they (the big people) open the doors. We all run outside to play. We find different things to do, but we're all yelling, running, and playing. Having fun. Where most in this world share popular media, we share an appreciation for communication. A thousand people watching the same TV show is not a community. A few hundred people talking to each other is. And THAT is what I like about MR. |

Well... playing "I know the answer to that one!" or "This is what has worked for me." or

"I think this would be a good thing for them to do." or Just trying to walk someone through a troubleshooting process, is more fun than playing Minesweeper. Luck; Ken |
