Man, Charlie Higson is awesome! I loved both books, The Enemy and the Dead. I asked on Twitter (but this was a few months back) and the next book is supposed to come out in September, but don't know how accurate that is now. I try to get everybody to read those books, but so far I don't think anyone has listened :P If anyone wants to read a snippet, you can go here: http://www.the-enemy.co.uk/site/teExtract.php5

Well spotted. Being doing it for ages, but you are the first to notice, or at least comment

I read Warm Bodies a few weeks ago- thought it was a good book. But the end was confusing- what happened seemed to be mystical or spiritual rather than SF or even fantasy. Maybe I didn't understand it? What did you think of the ending?

For those who are fans of World War Z... The movie is finally moving forward. Evidence here at screenrant.

I'm excited for it, and hope that they can put in some of my favorite scenes like Yonkers, Battle of Hope, the mansion event during The Great Panic, and maybe Christina Eliopolis' "Sky Watcher" episode. However, I wish they were doing more of an HBO mini-series or something rather than a feature film.

I haven't made it to the end yet. I put it on hold and started another book because it is a lot to digest (it's just weird!). I do like that it is very different from what you usually read. Now it doesn't sound like it'll be worth it to finish it...

Agreed, a mini-series would suit the book's format much better. Still looking forward to it tho .

Ok, read WWZ and thoroughly enjoyed it. I went on to I am Legend after seeing it recommended in this thread a few times. Got to say, didn't do much for me. I found it boring to tell the truth.

I've got Rot and Ruin and Risen ready to go.

What would be my best bet for something with a bit of action but also is kind of thoughtful and character oriented?

Cheers,
PKFFW

Hey man...look back in this thread a bit...I posted some info about a few books from Jonathan Maberry. Quite great reads with very strong characters IMO. The Joe Ledger series is terrific - the prequel, Book 1 and Book 3 of the series deals with zombies [well, zombies are in them, but I won't go into more details about the specifics...]

Highly recommended from me FWIW!

Oh man, thanks! Didn't know this about WWZ. I do hope they keep the episodic nature of the book intact, with all the different stories of individual struggles with WWZ zombies...

Nothing against the usual zombie film fare, but a more thoughtful zombie film treatment would be welcome by me.

Yeah I saw them mentioned and they are on my list too. Right now I'm looking more for the post apocalyptic survival type novel at the moment though. Am sort of on a kick for that kind of thing right now.

You should try The Dead and The Enemy by Charlie Higson. It's like Lord of the Flies (I read it a long time ago so I don't remember if I liked LotF. I mainly use it because it's the closest book that I can think of. A bunch of kids trying to survive, but a thousand times better) meets zombies. It's probably on your list, I'm always harping about them on here. Someone else needs to read it! Come on, do it.

I absolutely loved FEED and Deadline by Mira Grant-- zombie political thrillers.

Day by Day Aramageddon (straight up zombie survival) was good and State of Decay (a bit sci-fi'futuristic) by James Knapp was also excellent. You do military service when you are alive or the government takes you when you're dead...

Enjoyed The Gathering Dead (sort of Escape From New York with zombies).

If you want funny with those zombies, try Happy Hour of the Damned.

Loved World War Z, I think because you could substitute any pandemic and the stories would hold up. It did not feel fantastical.

Thanks! Happy Hour of the Dead sounds good. Found it on Overdrive so was able to download it from one of my libraries. Thanks again.

Finished The Dead this morning, the prequel to The Enemy, both of which I enjoyed, if a little "simple" (i.e. the opposite of complex ). Higson tells a good tale, and his adult (as in grown-up, not "adult" adult) books are also well worth a read.

Just started Robopocalypse, which though not zombies, is in a similar armageddon/end-of-the-world theme, and then I'm thinking of starting in on Scott Sigler's Infected.

Downloaded samples of The Enemy and The Dead. They look fun.

Happy Hour of the Damned is sledghammer humor. But what does one expect from a zombie? They aren't known for being subtle :-).
