I'm thinking of ignoring the thread altogether.

I sadly agree.

Lately, I haven't responded openly in this thread by congratulating milestones -- there're just too many karma milestones which have become meaningless and [to me] seem rather vulgar and gratuitous.

In my opinion this thread has been hijacked by these karma milestones. The original meaning this thread had [to me] has been lost in this constant congratulating and thanking about them. I can appreciate how others might think differently on this matter, a karma milestone is still a milestone, and I know threads can evolve, but I don't like the direction this one has taken and I'm likely to start ignoring it.

I think karma should be a more private matter, like the giving and receiving of it is now. Those small karma messages are the nicest part. It might be a good idea to hide the karma totals similar to the karma fortune.

I guess it all comes down to a personal opinion. I still like giving and receiving karma. I still believe karma should be given to any post you think deserving, but it should be accepted gracefully and without all this fanfare.

There are no milestones, people.

None at all. the same argument that has been made for karma can be made for keeping track of post count or for time with site.

I think the only true things worth something on this site are the friendships made. Since there is no real way to rate or tally that, I say get rid of post count and karma all together.

That's still what it is I'm pretty sure to a vast majority of forum members. I know that's when I give karma.

Well... recognizing that someone has been appreciated by the membership here (see first point above) doesn't seem obscene to me.

Perhaps you are visiting a different forum than I am (which is possible because I only follow a very few of the lounge threads) but I must wholeheartedly disagree with you here. To tell you the truth I feel karma is the MORE important stat of the member here... especially over post count.

If you want to opt out of caring about karma that is of course your prerogative. Thanks for posting your thoughts.

I truly enjoy giving karma as a token of appreciation for something someone has contributed, whether it be a kind word or gave me a laugh or made me smile, or a statement I can agree with or one that makes me think, a help or answered question , or an ebook made available to us through someone's hard work and there are so many other ways our members contribute that are unseen by many of us, but I confess to falling into the snare of karma whoring, a pride thing, getting carried away with numbers. But truly I don't want it if undeserved. Because then it doesn't mean as much. I can appreciate the kindness behind it though.

Though I appreciate the congratulations, as it does feel good to receive acknowledgement and attention, and to feel valued, as sadly some of us don't. But the more I think about it, I think the congratulations for me (regarding karma) are unnecessary, the karma messages are their own reward.

To be honest, I never looked at this thread until I saw myself approaching what might seem a "milestone" for me, wondering if anyone would notice. (Thank you to those that did!) I know the criticism isn't mean to shame anyone, but looking inside myself I do feel ashamed and I want to apologize for any way that I have contibuted to any abuse of karma. I would rather contribute to the continued success of this wonderful forum!

It's not really serious. As VivaldiRules points our, karma is like getting kissed by someone with red lipstick and you walk around all day so everyone can see it. And you can't wash it off. Karma builds quickly, so my preference would be that we not have that as a milestone, just because it makes this thread hard to follow. But that's just a preference. I like the karma fortunes thread more for that, because the fun part of karma is the fortunes...

This post of you has given me some trouble. I went at the start of this thread and read through it, fast of course. It marks the story of this site. I saw members that I see around now, cheering themselves for their first 100 posts. Great. They are the same, although their post count has grown, sometimes prodigiously sometimes no. same thing for karma. Of course with the growth the units of comparison have changed. Comparison of what. More posts more brain? More posts more heart? More karma more appreciation? In the case of recluse yes. And in his case also more brain and more heart. Why? I use my judgement, and for me it is yes. Tom calls this bragging power and I saw the word bragging said way back. Great. Let us brag. Not every body is as worthy as recluse. Sure and this does not change anything.

It's fun. I like it, it's joyful. I use my judgment. If I want to congratulate I do. If I am in hurry, I jump on wagons. Often I "pay" karma for the ride, and we all have fun. I like dealing in karma. Makes the cookies change faster. And I like giving "noble" karma, it warms the heart. And i like posting, frivolous silly posts, and posts that I had to think about and work to make them hopefully meaningful. The silly one get more recognition and I realize that I am more a jester than a serious poster. This also is fun. It is a virtual word, and as Ishmael says it is not serious.

This thread is possibly the funniest of all the lounge, it is the first I check when I enter the lounge, well maybe after I checked the Italian. There are no fights. Again it's fun.

Cheer up old friend, rejoice for the bad start of Italy and let's have fun.
