MS is telling me that they are going to push 3 GB to my computer prior to the release date so I'll be "ready to install" on July 29th.

ARRRRGH!! During the daytime my Surface Pro 3 is on a metered cell phone tether with a 2 GB/month limit. I sure hope that they do their pushing in the evening when I'm connected to my home wi-fi network.

If not, do you have any links?
Just navigate to the Microsoft Download Center. The link to the FAQ describing how to get a backup copy, for example, for the various Office versions is https://www7.downloadoffice2010.micr...?culture=en-GB , the first lines of which are:

For which Microsoft Office products can I get a backup copy from this site?
A backup copy is available for the following Microsoft products from this site.
  • Office Professional 2007
  • Office Home and Student 2007
  • Office Small Business 2007
How do I download a backup copy of my Microsoft Office 2007 product?...

etc.
It may be that there are some geo restrictions on it for you imposed by the EU but as far as I know it all works for all, after all it is on their site. I have used it at least once since February (to get a Windows 8.1 ISO).

As I said, you need to have a product key.

I'd suggest just changing your update settings to either the auto check and advise you, or the manual updates only options.

In the past pushed updates (e.g. for IE) are only automatically downloaded if one has auto download selected.

If you are using Win8, you can set the connection as "Metered". Only "priority updates" are downloaded over metered connections. The Win10 download shouldn't be considered a priority update.

I know this stuff is still in the download center, but it's only available for people who have a retail version, AFAIK. I don't have retail versions of Windows, as I get them at the same time as the computer. They're OEM's.

Previously, MS offerered ISO downloads of all versions of Windows and Office for free, to anyone around the world, through their provider, Digital River. It's that practice that they have discontinued, but it was the only official way for me to download updated Windows ISO files. (The first thing I would normally do with a new computer from any manufacturer is reinstall it from scratch; faster than removing all of their bloatware.)

The product key is embedded in the BIOS. On a Windows 7 PC, click start, right click computer, and scroll down until you see the product key for Windows. Or see here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/w...t-key#T1=tab01

or if you want to download a utility to check your key, see here (don't know anything about this site, it just came up in a search)

For those that want a Win10 installation ISO, Ed Bott has you covered:
http://www.zdnet.com/article/how-to-...tag=TREc64629f

Quote:

Microsoft wants you to have a free Windows 10 upgrade, and they really want you to use Windows Update to get it over the Internet. If you have a PC that qualifies for the upgrade, you should do this if possible. It really is the best, fastest, cleanest option for the vast majority of Windows PCs.

But a lot of my readers want traditional installer files, either on a DVD or in an ISO image file that is the equivalent of a DVD. If you are old school, you want an ISO because installing Windows on bare metal is just what one does, period.

I get that, I really do.

Having that installer image available gives you access to some installation and repair options that you don't have otherwise, such as the option to create bootable media. That's mandatory if you want to set up a dual-boot installation, for example.
Quote:

The staged installer used with Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 is as close to failsafe as software gets. If something goes wrong, you can roll back easily. (I've done those rollbacks a lot during this beta.)

After the upgrade is complete, you can create an ISO file from the cached upgrade files.

Or you can start the upgrade, wait until the installer files are fully downloaded, and then cancel. In either case, you'll find the large installer file stashed in a hidden folder called C:\$Windows.~BT, in a subfolder called Sources.

Quote:

Step 1: Download the ESD-Decrypter files. There's a download link in this post on the Microsoft Answers forum, although you can also find the files elsewhere. Note that this file is saved in 7z format, so you will need a third-party decompression utility such as 7-Zip to extract it.

Step 2: Extract the ESD-Decrypter files to their own folder and then copy the Install.esd file to the same folder.

Step 3: Right-click the Decrypt command file and choose Run As Administrator. (It's a batch file, so you can see exactly what it's going to do.)
Detailed instructions with screencaps and all, at the source.

There is a similar path detailed here that used a gui app to create the ISO:

http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2...-esd-file.html

(Not sure if this should be a thread of its own to make it easier to find...)

You did not mention your OEM Windows difficulty in your original post, and I made it clear in my posts that one required a key.

Further to Gotadimple's post I can confirm that the Neosmart tool works (I have used it).

If, as it seems, Windows is your concern, then if that is Windows 8.1 (or 8.0) an alternative and easier way to get an ISO (for example, you don't need a Key to download it) is to use Microsoft's Windows Installation Media Creation Tool. If the Key is embedded on your hardware then you may not need to know the key to install the ISO.

For they that want to preserve their present installation of windows if going the rout of upgrading to win 10. I have found a free imaging tool that is quick and easy to learn, to use, and works

http://download.cnet.com/Macrium-Ref...#editorsreview

Have tried other programs, been using the windows built in backup/image/restore with little luck, seems that they always wanted to fail just when I really needed them. So I had to start with my recovery to factory disks and rebuild from that point because all of my windows disks were phooey, seems the windows programs are hit and miss, with more misses.

Been messing with computers for over 30 years and this old fart in training is used to hardware failing or shooting oneself in the foot making mistakes and then being forced to reinstall everything.

So when the drive failed, I looked for another imaging program and found this one. All the others I have tried were so loaded with features that they were confusing to use.

I wanted a Timex simple way to image that did not take one year plus a day to do the job, unlike the windows built in system that may or not fail, and not a swiss watch.

Besides it is free, and tested by me as I made mistakes rebuilding my software to get where I wanted to be with the major mistakes that happen. (Shooting oneself in the foot !) So I had to use this program to recover and learn from mistakes (Several times this go around) and relearning again what I used to know, growing old does that to some.

Just a suggestion that may help someone here to get their system back exactly the way it was before upgrading and do not care about backing up anything because this is a total snapshot of everything on their hard drive/system.

Charles

Note:

You have to have an external drive or separate drive to do an image or backup to, plus a working recovery cd or dvd disk and burner that the program will need to make the boot disk that will run the recovery program, which is not the same as the windows recovery disk that is common.

I always keep a full cloned 2nd drive in all my systems that I can always boot up to in case of any problems (I use Acronis TrueImage, takes just a few hours to fully clone my 2TB drives), and just copy over any files that keep changing nightly, so I'll just do a fresh clone immediately before I install Windows 10 and then disconnect the 2nd drive since Windows has a nasty way of using other drives to store needed data. Then if I hate Windows 10, all I have to do is boot up to the 2nd drive, clone it back to wipe out Windows 10 and I'm covered.

I tried uninstalled the update that keeps the Windows 10 forever in the system tray doing nothing, and now I have the update icon nagging about installing it again. So it seems I'm stuck with having one useless icon or the other for the next 2 months sitting there doing nothing.

I have finally made a clone drive myself as insurance. (Now the challenge as in the past is to keep it updated)

My post was directed mostly to they that are not hardware geeks or used to pulling Backup/images on a regular basis.

The program I listed is almost dead simple and so quick (less than one hour) to backup to my three Terabyte storage drive from my one Terabyte laptop drive. That it is super easy, quick and painless to pull images instead of backups.

The program I listed is great for they that want, free, quick, easy, and quick insurance to not lose anything and the avoid the pain of starting from scratch and losing their stuff if something goes deep south and beyond recovery. (Sooner or later it happens to all of us)

To get rid of the icon, you have to turn off automatic windows updates at the update site. Then delete the updated file on your computer, the number has been listed here. Reboot, and then do a windows update at the update site, find the offending update and hide it at the site.

Then you can turn on automatic update and windows will not bother you about it, nor offer it because it is hidden and ignored.

Do a Google search about how.

Easy, but takes a tad of searching for the file and a reboot.

I had to wipe my work laptop so after a clean recovery of Win7, all the updates and then the install of 10 it's stuck on 10074. It finds the update 10130 then fails the download It did the same thing on my MBP. Tried the various fixes but same thing on both.

Odd thing is my desktop and the wife's desktop both had the "reserve your copy" icon but the not the laptop.

Have to say I'm still less than impressed with this. MS has a long way to go in the coming weeks if this is going to roll out and not turn into another Windows 8. I told my wife not under any circumstances to select the update and wait. I have a few coworkers that have W8 computers and have also been looking forward to the update but I suggested to them to wait as well.

The task today is re wiping 10 off the laptop and returning it to 7. I may keep it on the MBP to see if it fixes itself.

download the iso, mount it, and run setup.exe
I wouldn't advise people to wait based off of how the beta runs, especially not an older one.
