Yes, perhaps WinXP was before they crippled the games with version checking code. At any rate, I don't have XP. The earliest version I have is Win7, and I like that version of SOL better anyway.

I'm reminded of ye olden days when Lotus 123 was "copy protected" with code to check the floppy drive for a licensed copy. A quick hack with a hex editor at a certain location in the file bypassed that code and allowed it to run without the floppy disk.

...and I had the initials long before Android came around. It used to be a lot easier to Google myself.

And I just now tried to copy solitaire from a win7 box to a win 8.1 box. It didn't work. Whether it's coded to fail as the article says, or if I'm missing some far-flung pieces is academic. It's nontrivial at best, and it's far easier to download the patched installer from that link.

Check out "http://www.123freesolitaire.com/" for a decent solitaire & some other card games. When installing, one doesn't need to do a "complete" install bye submitting one's email for newsletters.

The solitaire game initially comes up in full desktop mode but can be resized to one's preference; haven't tried the other games listed. Also the appearance can be changed somewhat to a person's preference.

Anyway it is free now instead of web based only at one point; or perhaps I misunderstood earlier.

"PySol Fan Club edition" of the no longer supported PySol is decent but the table/cards cannot be resized; PySol was written in Python.

123Solitaire & PySol works in win10 & believe that they will work in win7 & win8 as well; haven't tried them in win7 or win8 tho.

It shouldn't. They changed providers recently (within the past year, well into 10's development cycle) so I think that was their way to save money without ditching it altogether.
