Is the PRS-950 eInk Pearl?
The Best Buy near me has the Sony PRS-950 for $199, which I think is a really good deal. But when I turn the display model on, the boot screen says "eInk Visplex." The display sticker clearly states Sony PRS-950 $199.99 Clearance, regular price $299.99.
The picture of the 950 on sonystyle.com matches what I saw in the store. Was the 900 eInk Visplex with the same chassis? Also, can the Sony Reader browse by folder? |

Yes it is Pearl. You can not browse by folder there is however a collections feature. You can create collections anyway you want. Author, Subject, etc...
Check out the back of the reader you should see Digital Book Reader PRS-950 printed towards the bottom. Last edited by Hoyt Clagwell; 06-03-2011 at 02:05 PM. |

Yes, it's Pearl. This is a common confusion, Vizplex vs. Pearl, and has been asked about in the forums also:
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=129722 https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=98819 Short answers from the threads: - "A Sony "branded channel product manager" wrote back re: vizplex Vs. pearl: The new screen (on both the PRS350 Pocket Edition and PRS650 Touch Edition) is an E-Ink Pearl Display – specifically the E-Ink Pearl display is a Visplex V220 model The “Pearl” part is the marketing name for the screen The Visplex V220 is the specific model of screen" - "Yep, it's using the Pearl screens, even though it displays 'Vizplex' at the bottom of the screen. When I first got my Sony PRS-350 I compared it to my Kindle DX Graphite, and the screens were the same." For browsing folders, flashing the firmware by installing PRS+ is a solution. PRS+ lets you navigate folders. I use it to navigate folders on a memory stick. PRS+ : http://code.google.com/p/prs-plus/ PRS+ does not change the appearance of the PRS 950. The screenshots were based on older models. |
