Just rerun the hotfix and reinstall your bin packages

So funny I was following a video on how to jailbreak using Winter break, I got passed the point of launching Mesquito, so I was jailbroken, but then I guess in the background the update for 5.18.1 was downloaded. I restarted and I thought it was part of the jailbreak process but it updated my Kindle to 5.18.1 so I lost it lol. I'm so stupid. I should have paid more attention.

Guess video and jailbreak instructions in general need to be updated to make it more obvious that users should turn off WiFi as soon as possible and use computer to check for presence of already downloaded firmware update bin file before restarting /
rebooting :P I would advice (where possible) to always do all pre-jailbreak online connections using WiFi hotspot from a mobile phone set to 2G only network signal or whatever else is available that has slowest Internet speeds. Last edited by shamanNS; 04-13-2025 at 01:55 PM. |

I don’t think it is possible to see a partial download file, it’s only when fully downloaded that one gets the bin file. But yeah, after running the jailbreak and before installing the hotfix, TURN OFF WIFI people.

Has anyone run into issues with MR installer with this jailbreak? I successfully (I believe, at least) used Winterbreak on my Kindle Signature 12th edition running 5.17.0 and also installed the hotfix. I see the "Run Hotfix" app and can invoke it successfully. I've copied the mrpackages and extensions folder from the MR installer zip to the root on my kindle, and then copied the KUAL bin file to the mrpackages folder. However, when I invoke ";log mrpi" in the search bar, my screen goes blank, eventually to return to the Kindles home page, and the bin file gets removed. No "Hush Little Baby" message ever appears. I'm not sure what I'm doing incorrectly. I would greatly appreciate any advice anyone might have. Thanks.

You can see the partial update. It's literally named something like update_partial.bin IIRC.

Hi,
It's been a long time since I had a kindle. Now I got an old one (Kindle Oasis 9th generation) and I decided to JB it so that I can install the Koreader on it. I followed the instruction here: https://kindlemodding.org/jailbreaking/WinterBreak/ 1) Finished 7/7 step of WinterBreak 2) Finished 5/5 step of Install hotfix But the "Run Hotfix" book still appears. Is it normal? Because the Kual step after that did not show the Kual book. Device info says the device is GOOO P812, firmware version 5.16.2.1.1 |

As soon as I had the device registered, I immediately set airplane mode. At this point, I saw this file and deleted it before moving forward. When I had to run Winterbreak with Wi-Fi enabled, as soon as it finished I put it back in airplane mode and again saw this file once more and deleted it. With Wi-Fi off, I then proceeded through the hotfix, mrpi, KUAL, and rename, steps before turning Wi-Fi back on. I don't know if deleting the file helped, but it certainly didn't hurt. |

so I JB a PW5, and after doing all the necessary steps to stop it from updating and so forth, it's working fine. Today I decided to go into the store (after accidentally pressing one of the book suggestions on Home page, which showed me the amazon listing as normal), and it was working as usual (not mesquito) but here is the thing, I didn't delete the hidden file to re-enable the amazon store... what could have happened?
I don't really need mesquito any longer so not bothered there, but seriously. Has anyone had the same occur to them? Last edited by Ebookus; 04-16-2025 at 08:31 AM. |
