Are you asking about before or after you JB the Kindle? Before the only totally certain way is to keep it offline. It might be possible to prevent it by filling storage to the point that there isn't room for the firmware download before enabling WiFi, but I have heard mixed reports on this.

If you have control of the WiFi router you may be able to block or throttle the servers that Amazon uses to download the update.

After JB you can use the above recommended extension to block it.

Before in this case; it's brand new and I'm assuming it's not yet updated to 5.18 so I'm hoping to keep it that way so I can apply the JB. Wary of activating it before I fully understand how to do that though.

The solution I have so far is to restrict Amazon's DNS servers, but we'll see how effective that proves to be. If the device auto updates during activation then I've got a problem.

The WiFi or fill-up trick might be device specific. At least on the latest ColorSoft, there is no way around the first forced update after registering. If you prevent the download+install any which way, it will keep on asking you to retry or jump to another WiFi network. No way out of the loop. You cannot trick it by starting the download, and restarting or anything. Luckily the forced update right now is 5.18.0.1.0, which you can jailbreak. And after jailbreak you can manually install 5.18.1 which retains the jailbreak. But at some point, Amazon might enforce 5.18.1 via the post-registration auto update, at which point JB will be locked out.

Moving the kindle far enough from the access point that the bandwidth is low enough that the download is not complete befor you return to airplane mode might work.

By a stroke of luck, I blocked a bunch of DNS addresses and got it activated, signed in and into airplane mode where I can confirm it still shows 5.17, so I think I've gotten lucky.

Which DNS did you use? And for which kindle ?

literally getting a 12th gen pw today. fingers crossed it updates to 5.18.0.1 or that I can prevent the update by filling it up!

Good news y'all! Brand new 12th gen PW from Best Buy came with some early FW and I was able to jailbreak it! Here's the steps I took.
- Powered it on and skipped setup
- Filled up the storage with some garbage files
- registered the kindle and immediately put it on airplane mode
- followed the jailbreak steps (reboot, copy files, open store, etc)
- installed the hot fix
so confirmed at least with the latest paper white you can still jailbreak a brand new one if you fill the storage before registering it, and then basically have it in airplane mode as much as possible.

I have succesfully installed WinterBreak on a 5.17.0 Kindle Paperwhite (12th Generation) bu following the guide on https://kindlemodding.org/jailbreaking
However after the step Disabling OTA Updates after clicking "Rename" the device rebooted and installed 5.18.1.
Now I can't continue by launching KUAL
Am i screwed?

My suspicion on what caused the issue @lolxnn was the fact that I think there was still an update temp file in the root of my kindle while doing the OTA update. Because the update only went through after I left the kindle idling for a moment.
So I think if the kindle is:
1. connected to USB
2. has a partial update file in the root
3. left idle (so no interaction with screen)

it will lead to the kindle auto completing the update that was partially done despite being in airplane mode and having the OTA installed.
So once the OTA completes you must immediately unplug AND also make sure that every time you plug in the kindle, delete any suspicious update files.

Rebooting after Rename or Restore is expected. The Kindle likely was downloading the update .bin file while you were working on the jailbreak. It's something for others to remember to check for before doing any steps that cause a reboot. You can delete the update file manually at any time.

Try to reinstall KUAL with the ;log mrpi search command.

I thought this sounded great, get the new double-tap feature plus keep my jailbreak. THIS DID NOT WORK. Manually updating to 5.18.1 killed my jailbreak on PW12.
