It "probably" won't hurt to click on rename again, but I really can't tell without studying the script. I also simply do not have time to walk you through how to check whether the OTA binaries have been renamed.

No worries. Thank you! I went ahead and pressed rename again, after reading unconstant's comment (thank you as well!), so hopefully it'll be good now.

I opened a SSH session and ran the rename.sh script. The two files could not be found so nothing was done and then my session was dumped when my Kindle restarted. after the restart, the otaupd.bck and otav3.bck files were still sitting there. The error message was something like:

mv: can't rename 'otaupd': No such file or directory
mv: can't rename 'otav3': No such file or directory

Thank you very much guys, this is really awesome. I done the jailbreak and installed Koreader smoothly on my Kindle Oasis V10. latest FW
Just in case someone needs help with the files I used to install the jailbreak, everything was from the winterbreak site, but I will mentioned it:
1. WinterBreak.tar.gz
2. Update_hotfix_universal.bin
3. kual-mrinstaller-khf.tar.xz
4. Update_KUALBooklet_ALLDEVICES_KS2_install.bin (which is Kual Coplate)
5. renameotabin folder
6. For Koreader I used koreader-kindlehf-v2024.11-131-g5cd9494ae_2025-01-10

Hope this will help anyone have same my device to jailbreak with no scary moments.

NOTE: just in case your FW updated during the process of jailbreak to the latest FW, you will notice NO HOTFIX book appear. This is normal, you need just to redo the jailbreak from beginning as the new FW delete the Jailbreak. I had this problem then just installed WinterBreak again and then the hotfix(like in the site steps)then the hotfix book appeared and continue to the next step.

If you want WinterBreak, you should back-off the existing jailbreak and then apply WinterBreak.

Couldn't run the hotfix "book" (didn't appear) when running on Scribe 5.16.8 - jailbreak appeared to work. Installed latest 5.17.2 and the hotfix book appeared so it could be run.

Should I be disabling OTA updates or will the jailbreak/hotfix persist through updates? I'm currently running 5.17.2 on my first gen Scribe.

my Kindle ppw 5 is backlisted from Amazon (Amazon replaced me with a new one and here in Brazil you don't have to return and they just blacklist. My problem was the back material begin to peel off).

SO I have a device where I can always upgrade the firmware manually and load the books from Calibre.

I can use the jailbreak in this conditions?

You cannot jailbreak a blacklisted Kindle as WinterBreak requires the Kindle to be registered with Amazon.

Easiest way is to download KindleTool and use it to extract those two files from the firmware for your device.

Does it show any message when booting?

I just can see **** SQUASH JB **** in the middle of the screen when loading.
