I got it all working. I needed to follow the instructions on "Installing KUAL/MRPI" first then the "run hotfix" showed up in the section Setting Up A Hotfix

Hello there, and thanks!
Just tried installing the hotfix on my KINDLE SCRIBE (2024) with no dice. It tells me I'm trying to install an invalid update file on my kindle once I copy the universal hotfix file over. Has anybody managed to get the hotfix installed on a 2024 release Kindle Scribe? Cheers |

For what it's worth, I installed WinterBreak on my daughter-in-law's old PW4 (fw: 5.17.0.3) since she purchased a Kobo Libra Colour. The older granddaughter loves seeing her books in colour). After getting the KLC setup and happy, she donated the PW4 to me. After installing the jailbreak, hotfix, KUAL/MRPI and KOReader, it seems to be working fairly happily.
She did look at the Kindle Colorsoft and a couple of other colour ereaders but since the Colorsoft is currently not even listed by Amazon Canada and Amazon US shows it as out of stock when checking from Canada, picking up the KLC at a local Chapters bookstore was the faster and easier option since Chapters had the same sale price as Kobo's online store. Edit: Since the first PW4 handled the jailbreak well, I decided to jailbreak my PW4 since I had the first one to use if mine bricked. My use for the PW4 is for testing ebooks when I am working on formatting ebooks for a few people so not a critical item for me and feeling in an experimental mode, I jailbroke it while it was on firmware 5.17.1. This went okay so I then downloaded and manually installed the 5.17.1.0.3 update. After that update went happily, I then reinstalled the hot fix and KUAL. A few restarts later, my PW4 was happily on 5.17.1.0.3 and KUAL launching KOReader & RenameOTABinaries seems happy enough. Last edited by DNSB; 01-05-2025 at 01:30 AM. Reason: Jailbroke another PW4 and did a firmware update |

I installed the current WinterBreak hotfix, redownloaded the KUAL files again just in case, and tried to uninstall KUAL Coplate and reinstall it, that was finally showing the KUAL document (although I was also getting an error log document I don't understand!), then installed KUAL hotfix properly. During the mrpi command installer screen, it would say successful install but once again quickly show an application error which I'm not sure is normal or not -- but THIS time, bizarrely, everything is working now and I don't know what changed in the factors. Quite frustrating! Even more so when other KOA3 users were fine here! ![]() I'm hoping the error log document won't keep appearing, if it does I'll have to consult the dev. I would love to see some guides/additional resources shared about what to actually do once jailbroken for the newcomers to the scene.. kindlemodding.org seems pretty geared towards the technical and longtime-modders side of things and kindlemodding.gitbook.io has a bit more on post-jailbreak content. And then this hacks page that linked in the guide . I'll have to go over and carefully read this thread a few times just to understand what version of KOReader to install! ![]() |

Yes, Scribe 2022 with the last firmware (5.17.2) and jailbroken with just one error:
https://i.imgur.com/FLLmykR.jpg This seems to have no impact on the jailbreak; everything seems to be working. KOreader HF version (https://build.koreader.rocks/download/nightly/) installed and running. Quote:

I tried to post an update (my issue fixed itself apparently) but it went into the void and might not be posted here. I'm unfamiliar with the automatic processes here and not entirely sure if it was because I attached a link here as a new member. Anyways, what I was trying to post was: I was a KOA3 user that wasn't having the whole guide work, but now I successfully completed all the steps of the guide. I tried again on the newest WinterBreak Hotfix version and redownloaded the KUAL (Coplate) files and it worked now (installed KUAL hotfix properly too, just in case) -- albeit with a log document that keeps popping up, and hopefully will stop reappearing (I'm not sure what the conditions are for it to appear yet). I'm subbed to Github project updates so hopefully that's the best way to stay up-to-date on the new developments of this project? I haven't seen any new dev posts but I want to say again.. thanks! It can be confusing as a newcomer but learning all this has been fun.

Works as intended (inc. KOReader) on a Kindle Paperwhite 11th Gen with 5.17.1.0.3 version.
Thank you. ![]() |

To get help, it is possible that the correct Kindle may need to be known. What you have is a PW3.

factory reset after ota
initially i successfully installed the jailbreak with koreader and disabled ota updates.
then i wanted to add some more packages like the screensaver, font package etc. after i tried to install them with kual, no app would start anymore, also not koreader. i could still get into kual though. so i factory reseted the kindle and tried to do the jailbreaking process again. i could do the winterbreak patch but after that, i wasnt able to install the hotfix anymore, regardless if i put it in the root directory and tried to install it via software update (it would just tell me that my software is up to date) or through mrpi with ;log mrpi (i get a blank screen and a log document afterwards). my guess is that since i disabled the ota update im not able anymore to install the hotfix. but i have no idea how to enable ota updates again. i tried the suggestion one commenter mentioned here with modifying the winterbreak jb.sh by adding some lines of code from the renameotabin\bin\restore.sh. no luck unfortunately. does anybody know how i can reenable the ota updates again? i attached my log file Last edited by elermo; 01-05-2025 at 09:15 AM. |

I hope I didn't screw up. I successfully completed the jailbreak on my KOA3, including disabling OTA. Since it was running fine, I deleted the hotfix "book" from my library since I didn't think I needed it after successfully installing it. Is it okay that I did that, or did I screw up? If so, should I go through the WinterBreak steps again?
UPDATE: I asked this on another thread, and Overtone1971 answered me: "Just reinstall the hotfix , and the booklet should appear again . If you installed ranameOTABin then remember to restore ota binaries first so that you are able to install hotfix update.bin . Don't delete the booklet as it is used to restore JB after an OTA update." That worked, and I didn't have to reinstall anything else. Last edited by PiperKev; 01-05-2025 at 11:46 AM.
