1) copy the following lines from \renameotabin\bin\restore.sh [open with a text editor] cd /usr/bin mv otaupd.bck otaupd mv otav3.bck otav3 2) Open jb.sh from WinterBreak, scroll down to the end and paste the 3 lines right before "mntroot ro" located 4th line from the bottom. Save and close and run the first stage of Jailbreak and the issue should be fixed. Also, KOReader from https://fw.notmarek.com/khf/koreader/ fixed my issue with "failed to start application" error |

I messed up installing the jailbreak.
Kindle Paperwhite 11 firmware 5.16.2.1.1 It looks as if the Internet was turned off, but I am sure that I turned it on and started uploading the modification as soon as possible. The worst thing is that in the madness of looking for a solution, I overwrote the backup copy with a modification ![]() After uploading and restarting, I cannot run airplan mode and updates. Everything is greyed out. Trying to repeat the steps does not help because after reaching the power on screen, the computer does not see the Kindle partition. Is there any way to restore functionality and install a jailbreak? |

Thanks for this, looking forward to jailbreaking my Kindle!
I have Oasis version 3 - and stopped connecting it so I am on version 5.16.8. Would you recommend I upgrade to the latest 5.17.1.0.3 before doing the jailbreak? |

Inside "koreader-kindlehf-v2024.11-124-g82eaa0098_2025-01-03.targz" archive there is a single file "koreader-kindlehf-v2024.11-124-g82eaa0098_2025-01-03" with no extension. It's actually a "tar" archive. You can add an extension to it, so it becomes "koreader-kindlehf-v2024.11-124-g82eaa0098_2025-01-03.tar". Extract it again, you'll get two folders: * koreader * extensions Just copy those to your Kindle (when PC asks if you want to merge, since "extensions" folder already exists, say "yes"). |

I've now done this on two devices, both PW5 Kids, both with a fresh upgrade to 5.17.1.0.3 before the jailbreak. Some notes after having the same experience on both devices:
1. When accessing the store, on both devices the Kindle actually did a store update and didn't run the jailbreak. On the first device I followed the troubleshooting instructions and did a factory reset, but on the second device I merely deleted the cache directory at Code:
.active_content_sandbox/store/resource/LocalStorage 2. As in this comment I also have a new KFT item under settings that appeared after the jailbreak. It didn't appear on the second device until after the jailbreak (I checked). 3. When MRPI is done installing packages and says "Done, restarting UI . . ." the Kindle displays an Application Error dialog with the text "The selected application could not be started. Please try again." I've been restarting the Kindle at this point but I don't know if that's necessary. |

was previously set to factory settings, or not, no matter when and how often Code:
.active_content_sandbox/store/resource/LocalStorage Kindle to factory settings, as soon as available as a USB device in Windows, Winterbreak copied to the Kindle, then logged in with the Amazon account, Wifi off, again Code:
.active_content_sandbox/store/resource/LocalStorage I have no idea what else to do. This on a PW7 with FW 5.16.2.1.1 |

successfully installed winterbreak 1.3.0 with 1.8.0 hotfix on kindle 10 gen (5.16.8 firmware) and kpw4 (10 gen) 5.16.9 firmware. But every time I deleted file like "update.bin.tmp.partial" of new firmware that started downloading every time when connected to the Internet. Then installed "Update_KUALBooklet_ALLDEVICES_install" by Update you kindle and KUAL works perfectly.
