Ok thanks... and I take it I don't even need to bother with the new version if I don't plan on editing the user config?

Unless amazon comes out with an update that changes this setting (in which case it would fail to install), no.

Do you know of any negative side effects for having too many screensavers?
It feels like the more I load (I have close to 500), the slower the Kindle boots up. Perhaps because I have randomize on. Do you think perhaps I need a defrag? |

@kranu: It's the random. And it'll only slow the *cold* boot process down. (A little. With 500 files, I'd say something between 10 and 20s. A vanilla K3 cold boot is already slow as hell.) Good thing we pretty much never have to fully restart that thing
![]() And a defrag makes no sense, it's a flash based storage (And you don't have direct access to the real underlying vfat FS anyway). Last edited by NiLuJe; 11-22-2010 at 12:15 AM. |

Great job, NiLuJe. I have a silly question:
I just applied the jailbreak and the font hack. But the problem is, I just want to replace the CJK font, but now the original English fonts are all replaced as well. Is there any way to get the original Kindle non-CJK font back? Many thanks for your help! |

@gpgpu: Yep, they're backed up in linkfonts/backups. Caecillia is the Serif family, and Helvetica the Sans family.

A few questions...
Forgive me if this has been asked a dozen times - it's hard to sort through 77 pages, but I know it gets annoying when the same question(s) get asked over and over
![]() Anyway, I recently got the Kindle 3 (3G version) and installed the 0.4.N jailbreak, 0.18.N screensavers hack, and 4.2.N fonts hack. NiLuJe - your instructions are clear and your work (and those who have contributed!) is awesome ![]() Everything is working great (at least, the Kindle operates like it did before the jailbreak and hacks). I'm just curious about a few things: 1.) If I understand this correctly, I can return the Kindle back to its vanilla state by using the uninstalls of each of these (jailbreak and two hacks), right? Do they need to be uninstalled in the same order they were installed (jailbreak, screensavers, fonts) or in reverse order? I ask not because there are any problems, but I'm curious as to whether it's possible for Amazon to release an official firmware update that does everything the hacks do and if they did that, could I return the Kindle to stock. 2.) If an update for either the jailbreak or hacks is released, do the ones I've already installed need to be uninstalled in order to update? 3.) What are the restrictions on the screensaver files? I see that there are 600x800 and 824x1200 files - is the "correct" resolution for new screensavers 600x800? And then, do they need to be .gif or can they be .png? Any limitations on the number of colors or can I just take any image and make it grayscale? 4.) Can I get official updates from Amazon with the jailbreak and/or hacks in place? Will the jailbreak and/or hacks need to be reinstalled if Amazon releases a firmware update and I install it? Thanks in advance for the feedback and thanks again for putting in the time and effort to make the Kindle even better! ![]() Last edited by moonlightinwhite; 11-23-2010 at 11:00 AM. |

The other hack updates can be installed right on top of the existing ones. Quote:
Yes, you can still get updates from Amazon. None of the current versions of the hacks interfere with Amazon updates. I'm not aware of any previous updates requiring re-installation. NiLuJe might have more insight into that one though. |

Yeah, the only slight issue we've had so far with an update 'breaking' a (non-jailbreak) hack was the 3.0.3 & the usbnetwork hack, and that was something very, very simple to workaround.

Excellent. Thanks for the responses!
![]() Just out of curiosity, is the Kindle's lack of EPUB support something that can only be fixed with an Amazon-supported firmware update, or is a hack feasible (even if not likely)? What are the odds that Amazon will give into peer pressure and revise the firmware to let people check out EPUBs from their local library? Last edited by moonlightinwhite; 11-23-2010 at 01:59 PM. See: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=107371 for a hack, actually, hackS (I don't know if jailbreak is correct term) that allows epub. |
