If I already have the 3.1 jailbreak and hacks installed, can I just install 3.3 on top of that (using the manual Amazon file), or do I need to reinstall the >= 3.2.1 jailbreak once the update is complete?

UPDATE: I did a manual restart of my Kindle and then it accepted the latest jailbreak. Putting my screensavers back now, and don't expect any issues. Then I'll try the new Amazon 3.3 update. Again, thanks to all for their hard work!
Problem as previously stated listed below, in case it helps someone: --- NiLuJe, I have a Kindle 3G at 3.1, running jailbreak .5N and screensaver hack .19N. I tried to upgrade to .9N (update_jailbreak_0.9.N_k3g_install) and got error U007, so I uninstalled the screensaver hack, then the jailbreak (with the .5N uninstall file), then removed the two folders it left behind on the Kindle. Both were successful. I then tried to install update_jailbreak_0.9.N_k3g_install again and still get U007. I know I'm back to vanilla because I have the old Kindle screensavers again. Any ideas? Thanks so much guys for all your hard work, -HM Last edited by Hollow Man; 10-15-2011 at 11:00 AM. |

In case you *have* to update your jailbreak (ie. pre 3.1 jb), you'll have to *uninstall* it first (and restart your Kindle *before* installing the latest one, if you were running <= 0.5.N or yifanlu's). Last edited by NiLuJe; 10-15-2011 at 12:32 PM. |

I had read all that earlier, thus, had left the jailbreak alone for quite some time. But I figured it couldn't kill me to be at the latest jailbreak version for the FW 3.3 update. I could be fairly sure people were happily running .9.N jailbreak and FW 3.3 successfully, but it wasn't obvious that anyone was currently running the older .5.N with FW 3.3 (even though granted, I wasn't running a pre-FW 3.1 jailbreak).
I always try to go with what the masses have. More people to turn to in case there's a problem ![]() -HM |

@Hollow Man: Technically, .5.N should have been sufficient, but, yeah, I get your drift
![]() (And, incidentally, the latest version does have a few notable bugfixes, namely the fact that it'll actually disable itself after an uninstall, without having to do a full restart, which, like you experienced, could be quite confusing when updating the jailbreak). |

I was surprised that trying to update to .9.N from .5.N caused an error, because surely I've rebooted the darn thing more than a few times since that .5.N install. Undoubtedly a reboot, then upgrading to .9.N, would've worked and saved me the time it took to uninstall everything, but that thought didn't occur to me until after I did the uninstall.
Come to think of it, I'm surprised the uninstall worked without a reboot. Ah well, I'm updated now, and will leave it alone (until, undoubtedly, the next FW update Amazon pushes out, heh). -HM |

@Hollow Man: The issue lies in the fact that the (slightly buggy) 0.5.N uninstaller didn't clear some 'temporary' stuff, and thus needed an extra reboot to get the Kindle back in a clean state, allowing it to successfully install some stuff

How do I find out what version of the Jailbreak I am running? I am running Firmware 3.1 and I installed the Jailbreak/Screen Save Hack back in February of 2011. Is there are reason for me to even upgrade the jailbreak and firmware? Thanks in advance!

NiLuJe puts a text file in the Kindle's jailbreak folder which says what version it is. My guess is you have .5.N if you installed it in February and you have FW 3.1. So no, unless I'm misunderstanding NiLuJe, because you've already got a jailbroken FW 3.1, you don't have to upgrade the jailbreak to put on FW 3.3.

As he said above, there are some bug fixes, but apparently nothing absolutely necessary in .9.N.

Hi guys!
Thanks for great tread, good job! Now please forgive me my noobieness, but I'm a new Kindle owner. Yesterday I updated my newly bought Kindle Wifi from 3.2.1 to 3.3, it have never been jailbroken - so am I right to just go ahead and do the jailbreak with the 0.9 .bin file?(update_jailbreak_0.9.N_k3w-3.2.1_install.bin) |

@Shack70:
Like Hollow Man said, if you have an info.txt file in a linkjail directory on the root of your Kindle, you're good to go. If you don't, you'll have to update your jailbreak first. @Spagnum: Yes ![]() |
