@ebjah: That's because the Kindle doesn't support Right-To-Left scripts, nothing we can do about it (at least in the default reader).

Couple of questions - Got a second Kindle and I've managed to install the Yifan Lu Jailbreak for firmware version 3.2.1 (576290015):

@RecQuery: There's no real need to switch jailbreaks, once it's done, it's done, everything else should work fine after that

Hi,
I jailbreaked and added the screen saver hack to my kindle a couple of weeks ago, but today I managed to sit on it and now the screen does not work, USB still works and I can still press the keys and can see that things are happening (although I can only see a tiny portion of the screen). I was wondering what the correct sequence of keypresses is to uninstall them so that I can send it back for replacement. Thanks |

Hi, i used the fine work you've shown in this thread, with great success. Now, however, I've decided to sell my K3 in favor of the rooted nook I was given for my birthday. I ran the appropriate uninstall for the screensaver, then the jailbreak hacks, but while it has returned to normal operation, the added folders and files are still present. I don't want to sell this to someone with the tracks of the hacks present. How can I return the device to original?

I installed the font hack, I read earlier that it pretty much replaces the default with these new ones in various parts of the browser and menus. However what i'm more interested in is fonts used in the actual book reading portion, right now it gives me a regular, condensed or sans serif. Is there any way to get more? Also whats the difference between the ones that come with the hack and other ones like Fontin, they all seem to have the same type of fonts in them.

FWIW, I jail broke and changed screen savers on a brand new kindle graphite. within a week the display died. same with the replacement.. don't know if it was the screensavers, which were photographs, or the jailbreak software but the graphites died rather quickly. be forwarned

NiLuJe, I'm interesting to modify your Kindle 3 font hack configuration to allow me to use difference font-face for difference character set.
Such as I want to add Thai fonts for display Thai character code (0xE01-0xE7F) without effect existing standard Menu, or Dialog. Could you please guide me how I do that? |

@Serevinus: Uninstall hacks, then the jailbreak, then remove the remaining custom directories on the root of your kindle.
@daburch: Completely normal, you can safely delete them. @Nodnarb518: The default font used in the reader is the Serif_* family, check that you're using the 'regular' font in the [Aa] menu. @tekkasit: Unless the script you want to display isn't LTR, using a font that support the unicode range you need as the CJK family should be enough (on a Kindle 3). |

Needing a font with greater Greek character support
So I really didn't like the font that came with my Kindle 3, so I applied the font hack with the default fonts included in the hack (Droid and DejaVu, I think). They are much more attractive, and I like that they are more Free than the proprietary font Amazon uses.
That being said, I need a font with better Greek character support. One of my ebooks (the New Testament of the Bible in 1st century Greek) does not display properly with the default fonts in the hack. It did display properly with Amazon's stock Kindle font, so I don't feel like this is too much of a request. I know little about fonts, particularly little regarding alternative character sets. But I would like something that is clear and readable, so if I understand correctly, it needs to be able to be hinted well. Additionally, I would prefer a font with some type of open source licensing. That's just the kind of guy I am. I think the font "Gentium Plus" would meet my needs for character support... This is from their website: Quote:
Thanks in advance! |

Scoured the web looking for a hack to let me undo my SS 0.4 hack and no luck. Stuck at 2.5.6 (501108064) + SS 0.4
Any ideas on where to go from here? Anyway to reinstall an older bin or are 2.5.8 updates availalble in another hack? Basically I just want page numbers. |

If anyone is also in need of more complete Greek character support, I wanted to report that I did get the Gentium Plus typeface working on my Kindle 3. I just downloaded the .ttf files from the SIL website, and then renamed them to conform to the Kindle naming scheme, and then put in them in my linkfonts folder (replacing the serif fonts already there), like NiLuJe described. I'm using the "light" hinting option, and the text is comfortably readable. I don't feel like it's as clear as Droid Serif was, but it has a much wider character support, so it's an acceptable compromise. If I'm reading at length from a book that doesn't need support for the additional characters, I'll probably switch the font over to my sans serif typeface, Droid Sans, which looks great.
Thanks for the great hack and clear instructions NiLuJe, and all others that have contributed. If anyone has any suggestions that could tweak this setup to make it better, that would be appreciated, but for now, this works for me! Thanks! |
