I want to try my hand at a slightly customised package. While my shell script proficiency is probably good enough (and I promise not to blame anyone else for my mistakes), the whole signing process is slightly beyond me, so I figured I'd start by simply recreating a package and seeing if it was identical to the released version, to check my system is working properly. I got files that seem to be close but not identical. My versions in each case seem to to be a percent or so bigger.
Could this be explained by slightly different versions/default settings of the initial tar, or is there something worse? Spoiler:

@camcorderjihad: If you don't have a linkjail folder in the root of your Kindle, yeah, you'll need to update the jailbreak. From the 2 months thing, I'd say just install the latest jailbreak on top, you shouldn't have any trouble. (Worst case scenario, if you had a more rcent jailbreak installed, the install will fail).
@8annika.yael: Which settings? @JJanssen: If you're packaging the exact same thing and get a different file size, yeah, probably a tar quirk. I've seen this sort of thing happen, for example I was getting slightly different filesizes with tar+gzip on an x86_64 box vs. tar+gzip on another x86 box with the same default settings and input (Assuming you're using the latest python packager script). [FYI, I'm using tar (GNU tar) 1.26, gzip 1.4, and Python 2.7.1 on a gentoo ~x86 box] @KindleUp: If you can't figure it out from the scripts, you probably shouldn't be trying to do it. I have the latest jailbreak and SS version on my K3 3.1. The "random" feature isn't working on either. The numbers appear before the screen saver files on one, but they still stay in the same order. On the other Kindle, the numbers don't show up (and don't rotate randomly). How can I fix this?

@camcorderjihad: Then you probably have an iteration of yifanlu's jailbreak installed. (Unless you encountered an error with the *un*installer, in which case, yeah, that would be normal, just *install* on top of what you have).
@kuklachica: If the numbers are here, then it's working, just restart your Kindle. If you don't see the zero padded 5 digit prefix, then you messed up the the blank 'reboot' file somehow. |

k2 with ss hack - need to undo it. I swear I started with clarknova's hack, reinstalling his and/or your hacks and then applying uninstaller cannot get SS 0.4 to go away. Cannot upgrade to 2.5.7. Any help appreciated.

@jwmjwm: Use the proper uninstall file corresponding to what you actually have installed.

Honestly think I am. I can make the hack go away, but not the SS + 0.4 which prohibits me from updating.

@jwmjwm: Then you're not using the right uninstall

Worked Awesome! but what size should the pics be?
These are awesome instructions!!! I am not a computer person but were easy for me to follow! I started putting pictures on my kindle at 800x600 pixels and they don't take up the whole screen....does anyone know what size the pics should be??

If you actually did 800x600, you have the dimensions reversed. 600x800, as a screensaver will cover the entire screen of a k3. It is slightly different if you are using the photo viewer app where there are the status lines that can throw things off.
