And I just realized that this is a Kindle 2 International, not a Kindle 2 US as I assumed (this was a gift from my inlaws, I just thought it would be a US and not international.)

@DJJustice: You're not using the right .bin file for your Kindle model. Check your S/N on the Settings page again. And *never* reboot your Kindle with a custom .bin file, that's the root of the 0003 error.

FOLKS, I'm not stupid, and I'm not even computer illiterate. I did this before and the link I was given gave me step by step by step instructions. It's really confusing in here.

I've read through this thread as thoroughly as I could but couldn't find the answer to my question. Sorry if I missed it.
I have Kindle 2i with jailbreak and screen saver hack installed. I noticed the dead author screen savers are saved to a backup directory. If I delete these files and then uninstall the screen saver hack, will it be able to restore the dead author screen savers without the backup copies? If I were to replace those backups with my own pictures but with the same names, will it use those instead of the dead authors after uninstalling the hack? How were the backups created? Is it possible to just overwrite the original files (through the hack process) with files of my own choice? |

@KindleUp: The backups are just that, a backup, they're only here if you want to use them as 'custom' ones, other than that, you don't have to worry about it, they take no part at all in the process itself.
There's no need to 'overwrite' anything, the framework doesn't expect the same exact filenames, just put your custom screensavers in the directory and restart. (And the reason why you don't want to bypass the hack is because it'll make official updates fail). |

Thanks for the reply, but what I was actually wondering was is could you some how through your hack process, or during the uninstall of the hack, replace the original dead author pics with custom ones. Essentially replace the 20 or so dead authors with custom ones and then uninstall the hack and still have the custom ones. Permanently replace the dead authors with custom ones. Sorry if I am obtuse.

@KindleUp: No. It's technically doable, though, but I can't see a single good reason to do it that way.

I've just applied screen saver hack and it work perfectly.
However, I notice a change in sleep mode of Kindle: - Before, after a time, it will automatically switch to sleep mode and display screen saver. - Now, it just stand there, not go into sleep mode. So, is this how the hack works or my Kindle got problem? Mine is Kindle 3 in 3.1 Thanks. |

@HTung: Unless you managed to get your hands on an old SSTimeOut hack, nope, we don't touch the sleep timeout.

Didn't read the whole topic so this may have been answered already.
First off, thanks for the work and the tutorial on how to do this stuff. I did the screensaver hack and while the images are working great, I can't get them to randomize. I've put a blank "random" file in every possible folder according to various tutorials and the images won't randomize. Any help? |

The random file goes in the linkss directory.
Connect the Kindle to your PC and look in the linkss/screensaver folder. Have your pictures all been renamed to have numbers at the beginning of their names? That's the telltale sign that the random feature is working. Basically, upon every reboot, the files get reordered by changing those numbers that have been appended to the filename. That's what creates the random display order. It's not really random since pics show once in sequence until the end of the list is reached, then the exact same cycle is repeated. When you tire of that order, reboot the Kindle, and they'll be shuffled again. Note the reboot must be done via the Kindle's menu: Home > Menu > Settings > Menu and select "Restart." Try rebooting and see if the pictures get renamed. -HM |
