Has anybody else noticed text ghosting on some of their custom screensaver images? I never have ghosting on the stock images, but a few of my added images always seem to faintly show the last page of text. Any ideas on how to prevent that? I'm using 600x800 images (some gif, some png, etc) and converted most (I think all) to indexed color using a pallet exported from the stock images.

I've noticed if the pics' backgrounds are completely white, none of the text from the previously showed screen is visible. But if a picture has shades of grey, then yes, I can see the previous text.
It would be interesting to know if the images that came with the Kindle are different in any way. It would be nice to minimize this. -HM |

There's ghosting everywhere, and we can't do a thing about it, that's how the e-Ink screen works
![]() It's more noticeable on some patterns, and depending on what was previously on the screen, so that may explain why you didn't notice it with default screensavers, but it's there, regardless of your pictures. That's why the Kindle 3 does a flash to *white* before showing a screensaver, it helps a bit with the ghosting. |

Still curious to know why, from the technical point of view, that a plain white background shows no ghosting at all. Like the white backgrounds on these images:

@Hollow Man: Each screen is a wee bit different, but for example, on mine, I do see very faint ghosting on white backgrounds on the areas that had very sharp contrast before (ie. text). It is *very* faint, way less noticeable than the reverse is (text => pure black/shades of grey), but it's there too.

I'll have to take a closer look. The text may be there for me as well. I don't care one way or another...just some observations. The important thing is I barely notice it while reading, and if I do, I just refresh with Alt-G.

Anyone managed to install the SS hack onto Kindle with 3.1? Damn I wish I'd found this place before Kindle pushed it onto me. =(

I posted the issue with screenshots in the thread before: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...postcount=1254 After upgrade to jailbreak-0.6 & fonts-4.4, the problem still exits. Could you please have a look on this? Thanks. |

You need to first install the jailbreak for YOUR specific kindle. You find the xxx.bin file and place it in the root of your k3. Then you use the Menu to Install Update (Home, menu, settings, menu, install update). Then you do the same for the screensaver hack. Correct bin file onto k3. Install Update like noted above. |

@Ithuriel_06: Like everyone said, not enough info to guess what could have gone wrong.
![]() @chcheng_rwth: Probably an issue with your font (bearings/ascent/descent) [bear in mind that the Kindle's not really optimized for displaying CJK characters, so when I say 'issue', I mean 'incompatibility with the Kindle software' ^^]. You might still want to try an FT override (authint/light most likely) and see if it helps, though. |

Is this impossible to do using a Mac? I'm unable to restart my K2 (from the Settings menu) while it's plugged in to my laptop, I can only reset after I eject it and restart it from the Home screen.

@DJJustice: Er, what? Of course you'll have to eject your Kindle before being able to use it, that's nothing new. And there's no 'reset' to be done, anyway.
BTW, restarting/updating a Kindle while plugged to a computer is a baaad idea. |

Hmm, maybe I should be a little more clear -
I have the original Kindle w/ 3G + WiFi; software version: 2.5.3 (490488060), and while I'm fairly certain I installed the jailbreak properly I could certainly be wrong. I copied the proper jailbreak (update_jailbreak_0.6.N_k2_install.bin) and then ejected my Kindle from my computer, went to the Menu/Settings and saw that "Update My Kindle" was grayed out. Since I couldn't use that, I restarted my Kindle and it went to the "updating software" screen, which failed (it had 0003) at the bottom) and tapped "r" to finish restarting and went to the Home screen. Did the same thing with the Screensaver .bin and ejected/restarted the Kindle the same way. Plugged it back into the USB port and didn't see the linkss folder anywhere. I'm no programmer, but I can definitely follow instructions - did I miss a step somewhere? I attached a screenshot of the Kindle root folder if that helps. |
