Hi guys. I joined up after reading the very informative Wiki page on how to hack Kindle screensavers. I followed all the instructions and it does work, but the only problem I'm having is getting the images I put in the screensaver folder to randomize. I stuck a 'random' file in the linkss folder and they still show in alphabetical order. I've updated, rebooted and all of that and they still stubbornly won't be random. Am I missing something here? The 'random' file was made from a copied and renamed autoreboot file.
I have these files in my linkss folder at the moment: auto auto reboot mounted_600x800 random Any help insight would be appreciated. I have a Kindle 3G UK model. The hack itself is brilliant, thank you. It's fab seeing my custom stuff on there, no offense Emily Bronte but I much prefer to see Gandalf! lol :-) Jess. |

When you connect the Kindle to your PC and look in the linkss/screensaver folder, have your pictures all been renamed to have numbers at the beginning of their names? That's the telltale sign that the random feature is working.
Basically, upon every reboot, the files get reordered by changing those numbers that have been appended to the filename. That's what creates the random display order. It's not really random since pics show once in sequence until the end of the list is reached, then the exact same cycle is repeated. When you tire of that order, reboot the Kindle, and they'll be shuffled again. -HM |

Ahh yes I see how the random option should work. I checked the filenames in my screensavers folder and they haven't been renamed with numbers at the beginning. Is this something I should do manually?

No, it should happen automatically. Do one more reboot and see if it adds the numbers to the filenames.

Oki dokes, just add a 'reboot' file in the linkss folder right? I'll do that now and see what happens.

Yeah, you can add a reboot file to the linkss folder. Eject the Kindle from your PC and in 10-30 seconds it will restart on its own.
Or you can just restart from the Kindle's menu: Home > Menu > Settings > Menu and select "Restart." -HM |

I restarted and it still doesn't give the filenames any numbers. What should they look like for example if they got numbered? Maybe if I did it manually something might happen?

That's because you have to do a full restart to trigger the random feature, a framework restart (as done by dropping a 'reboot' file) isn't enough.

Go figure...I didn't realize that the reboot was slightly different by using the reboot file. Always good to learn.

Oh, so doing a full system restart will randomize? I thought you had to drop in the reboot file to get it to randomize. I was wrong all this time. So every time I do a system restart it will re-order them right, without having to do anything with the files/folders on my PC?

NiLuJe, how can I disable or turn off your font hack function without uninstall?
I just want to play on your rendering options and to capture the screen to compare the quality of letter ranging from no apply font hack, light, bci. Last edited by tekkasit; 03-11-2011 at 06:54 AM. |

@Snakey: Yep.
@tekkasit: Not sure I understand what you want exactly. If you remove the 'auto' file, the hack will be *completely* disabled, that means no FT override either. If you want to try the different FT settings with the default fonts, the easiest way will probably be to setup the hack to use the default fonts, and then play with the FT settings. |
