For future reference: I think I found the issue. I have a kobo and so I convert my epubs to kepubs. However, I had not properly set up fanficfare to also update the kepubs. In order to do that, you'll need to change the following settings:

- [X] Delete other existing formats

Unless you have any special reason for converting it manually, KoboTouchExtended will convert to kepub on-the-fly.

Indeed. But before I knew that, I did the converting manually via Calibre-web (which I've since also stopped using)

Edit: This is the template I'm using:

Code:
{author_sort}/{title} - {authors}
Take out {author_sort}. All it;s going to do is cause you to eventually have many empty directories. You can put a fixed subdirectory and put your books there. That's one less variable that can't be changed in order to put the updated book on your Kobo as the same book.

(After writing this I noticed it may come across as a brag or something, that's not at all how I meant for it to sound, but it's midnight and I've already taken my sleep meds so I'm not the brightest of lightbulbs right now )

But, then my books won't be in subdirectories for each author... I have read thousands of fanfics in my life, and plan to read thousands more with this ereader. Since I started reading on this ereader I've read about a dozen stories and have more than 100 queued and ready on my ereader, and I want to keep them all on my ereader, like my personal digital library, and not having folders for each author sounds like a nightmare...

I can't uncheck "Sync to this device as soon as it is connected".

I'd like to auto populate from books on device, but only way I manually trigger a sync, however auto populate forces sync as soon as connected to be checked.

Am I misunderstanding something or is there some way to do what I want?

Trust me, it's fare from a nightmare. Think of it like calibre where the eBooks are stored behind the scenes. The thing is, if you do change the author name then send that to your Kobo, you create another copy of the book and another directory. When you finish reading by that author, you delete all eBooks by that author, you end up with an empty directory and eventually lots of empty directories.

It's a lot easier to just put your eBooks in one directory. I called mine books. It's a lot less clutter when you do to look at your Kobo's internal storage on your computer.

Why do you want to manually sync? You put all the book in the default list that you want to put on your Kobo and that gets done when you plug in your Kobo and calibre sees your Kobo. It works very well that way. I don't have to remember which books I wanted to put on my Kobo.

There's no need to make this more difficult for yourself.

If sending the updated book to the kobo and updating the TOC doesn't work, then you have two copies of the book on the device and you should try deleting the old one on the device from the kobo menus.

The Reading Goal plugin has an option to "jump to the selected book" when opening the Edit Goal dialog. Could something like this be adapted for editing reading lists?

I got the plugin setup and made a reading list, and configured it and calibre to add the books to a collection on my kobo. Is there any way to sort my kobo collection (on the device) in the order of the reading list? I have the reading order column set up. While reading up on getting this plugin setup I thought I saw something about automatically editing the 'date added' to allow for a 'custom sort' of a sort (haha puns) on the device, but I can't find that again. Any thoughts?

Not really. You can mess with last-read dates and restoring bookmarks with Kobo Utilties but its tedious.

Not sure this is suitable for you. But a possible solution is to use a plugboard to prepend the reading list index to the title. But for that you need a custom template function:

Code:
def evaluate(self, formatter, kwargs, mi, locals, list_name):
    from calibre.gui2.ui import get_gui
    gui = get_gui()
    rl_plugin = gui.iactions.get('Reading List')
    if rl_plugin:
        book_ids = rl_plugin.get_book_list(list_name)
        try:
            return '{:03d}'.format(book_ids.index(mi.id) + 1)
        except ValueError:
            return ''
    else:
        return ''
To add the template function above to calibre:
  • Go to Preferences > template functions > template functions tab > copy/paste the code above in the program code box
  • In the Function textbox give the functions its name: reading_list_index
  • Argument count = 1
  • Press the "Create" button

Now you can use this function in a template:

Code:
program:
    idx = reading_list_index('Default');
    if idx then idx & ' - ' & $title else $title fi
The above template prepends the reading list index to the title. Replace Default with the your reading list name. Also note this function only works in GPM mode as in the example above.

Note: This template function pads the index with zeros to ensure the sorting will be OK.
