1 - is there a way to control backlight outside of the home screen or apps designed with it? that is, some backlight widget in the status bar so I can access it from whatever app I use?

I can share apk to control LED brightness and display notification icon when light is on. You can contact me via private messages. App looks similar like this video, but now is little more advanced.

I am very interested in i86 if it can handle CoolReader + GoldenDict.

That is my favorite combination, because of it I am still using T2 as my main reader.
Sure, GoldenDict is not exactly e-ink friendly, but still probably the best to handle multiple dictionaries in multiple formats.

As to CoolReader, I am especially interested in jotas builds, and its later builds seem to support at least T68, C67. Anybody tried it on i86?
However, there was no new version from January....

On T2, I am pretty happy with cr3.0.57-15-37-jotas.apk.
But the latest version from jotas, as far as I know, is 3.0.57-15-51-1.
The thing is, the latest versions have 3 separate builds.
Previously there were only builds for Nook Simple Touch (armeabi) and for Sony PRS-T1/T2 (armeabi-v7a).
Now there is another more generic armeabi-v7a build for more android e-ink readers.
Because i86 has a Cortex A9 processor, both armeabi-v7a builds should work, but one might be better than the other, who knows.

There are the following apk files, for example for the latest 51-1 version:

cr3.0.57-15-51-1-eink-jotas.apk - for e-ink readers, such as C65,C67,T68 - worth trying

cr3.0.57-15-51-1-jotas.apk - for T1/T2 (but not only?) - perhaps worth trying, especially if the 1st one is not working properly.

cr3.0.57-15-51-1-nook-jotas.apk - for Nook Simple Touch, armeabi (not v7a)

At least if you could check if page buttons work, and if so, if they also work in the list of options inside settings (like font sizes, font lists, etc) and do they also work in the list of the recent books and in the list of books in the built-in file manager.

There is also that problem with the official buggins build where the external card is no longer visible under android 4.4.
i86, as I understand it, is about to be upgraded to android 4.4?
But probably not yet?
Anyway, the same problem might or might not be present in jotas builds.
It seems that only the newest buggins builds have the problem, so perhaps it is an issue with some newer library he is using. The builds from jotas might be too old to have that problem

Of course, if jotas builds for e-ink readers are not working, then, hopefully, at least buggins builds will work even if with annoying e-ink unfriendly features.

But it is not so simple - he is hiding the actual link on that page - you need to select a seemingly empty space right after the words "Google Play.", then to remove unnecessary spaces - that gives you the actual url.
Furthermore, the rar inside is password-protected. Jotas makes you guess the password, giving sufficient hints (but in Spanish) about it (it is the url itself, but only the server, does not include the page details)

I am not sure if it would be appropriate for me to give here the actual url and the password explicitly, but I could PM them to you if the information above is not sufficient.

Can someone tell me if ML plus version has any improvement in the ghosting when zooming or dragging? This video at 7:15 shows the problem of the normal version, which I probably won't stand.

I'm considering this reader, Inkpad 840 and Aura H2O, it will be my first and I intend to read epub, pdf and manga. Also, is the difference in the screen technology noticeable (pearl, carta)? I can't see the devices in person... mostly kindles here...

Scrolling would never be good on eink device (that's not the purpose). Also, I thing ghosting on eink follow the same definition as on LCD: previous "screenshot" stay a bit erased in background. It happen sometime but you just stay on the "next" button for 1 sec and it render the page better. Really easy.

For the quality of the screen that's a good question. I'm noobs to ereader and i find it very gray. I guess that's normal but Carta has a wither screen and good review on the paperwhite 2 (but no 8' screen device to find). Does the new firmware bring better white ? To ad an other disappointement, the back light is very uneven. I try NOT to use the backlight has it is LED flickering but it would have been so much better looking.

On the pro side, IR screen work really great (but it's maybe harder to DIY fix the backlight cause of that). I d'nt see any visible pixel. I'm enjoying reading any PDF during hours. I zoom or rotate the screen with the software app already there.

Do I keep it ? I thing I will and upgrade software are coming. Otherwise I have till tonight to decide!

I have two questions that I have been annoyed about.

1) is there a way to toggle disable/enable the Ir-touchscreen using the buttons?
I find myself trying to remove specs of dust on the screen while reading and the touchscreen reacts leading unwanted behaviors. I use mainly the buttons during a reading session so I don't miss the touchscreen.

2) Is there a way to disable boot after plugging in the e-reader?
After a reading session I tend to shut the reader off. Before I go to bed I usually plug it in to charge. But then it boots itself up. Is there a way to disable this illogical behavior ?

I downloaded and have tried the coolreader -eink you mentioned as first choice. I find it works beautifully. The page turns buttons work but are the reverse order of normal. You can use the page turn buttons as volume keys and then they work as normal. When used as volume the long press forward to refresh the page does not work. So I would just use the normal setting as page turn button and press the other one when wanting to navigate forward or backwards.
I tried to change the font and bold the font. It worked.
I could navigate through the menus with the page forward/backward buttons (I think you asked about that) sometimes.
To open a book in the file browser worked.
I did not find any resent books option.
There are some shortcomings though:
The i86 is equipt with a 3,5mm female earphone jack so you can connect it to earphones and listen to text-to-speech (tts). For some reason jotas version is stripped of this feature.
The "more" submenue in jotas version is stripped of quite a lot of different subheadings.
apart from tts it misses:
toggle text auto format
open previous book
Toggle automatic page flipping

But perhaps it depends on what book you load.
I used a 4MB/160 pages immunology textbook.

What I mean is that books don't load automatically. You have to wait between 15 to 30 seconds before a book is displayed.

I've got the i86 hdml plus reader. I like to listen music while reading.

Audio quality is average, poorer than my android phone or tablet. Volume is lower, for example.

But I've noticed that with my android earphones (single button in-line remote with mic) I ear a "mono" kind of sound. Instead of pausing audio, continuous pressing the play/pause button makes audio sound different, better, more "stereo" adding an inmersive effect.

I don't know why this happens, maybe the device is not compatible with android earphones, or maybe my reader has a bad or defective audio plug?

All of my earphones are with mic, and all of them work fine.

Is anybody having the same problem playing audio on the i86+?
