I'm running the beta firmware on my Inkpad, and page turn speed is almost as fast as on my Paperwhite.

apps & i86 user

Gidday,

New user letting others know about apps installed:
(1) vlc works, plays ogg etc. I haven't tried video, probably not a goer on eink?
(2) Droidfish installs.
(3) Orion reader installs, quick page turns with djvu...plus can alter djvu backgrounds. I'm still trying to sort out page navigation though, "fit width" with page turn "press" seems the best route thus far.

Since I did it, I also modified the source to enable two-column view in portrait mode also: if the i86 ain't big enough for that...

Please rename the file, removing the final '.zip' (that was needed to upload it)

You can install it with a standard
Code:
adb -d install FBReaderJ_ice-cream-sandwich_ALT.apk
after having enabled debugging in the settings.
I am sure there must be other ways: copying it in the memory and opening through the device should do...

Please note that FBReader has by default a grained texture set as a background wallpaper: it is just sensible on an EPD display to disable it; please go in
(menu) > Settings > Colours n Wallpapers > Background
and set it to 'Solid Colour'.
Do not forget to do it: you may not notice it immediately on greyscale

Also note: you can install your chosen fonts and have FBReader use them; default path is /mnt/sdcard/Fonts (you can find and edit the default paths in the Settings, first option row)

Enjoy!

NOTE: I was notified recently that the attached did not work properly. I just uploaded (19 Jul) a version that surely works. I may try to get a newer version working, if people here want it. Still, the real thing to do is to ask Onyx «Please rename your bundled application so that it does not conflict with the original one, thanks».
Does anyone understand how to install this app. I can't see any downloading link and how do I install using
Code:
adb -d install FBReaderJ_ice-cream-sandwich_ALT.apk
if I don't have a terminal?
Btw I have rooted my i86 so I think I can get a terminal app.

First, why would you want to install another FBReader ?
Second, you can use Titanium Backup to backup the default FBReader app, then you freeze or uninstall it and then install the version you have.

I'm thinking about an i86 plus mostly for mangas (sold my DR900 a few days ago, I couldn't stand the sipix anymore and moreover had a lot of problems indexing new files in the microSD), can someone test if it works well with Mango?

Thanks

Thanks for the tip with Titanium Backup!

Because perhaps that version has better TTS support than the older. A newer version might be nicer even if the TTS is not changed.
The app I mentioned has some modds for the i86 compared to the vanilla version on google play as well.

Btw it is strange that onyx boox put an app on my device that I can't update.

I have two dictionary apps that can work with stardict.
They store their dictionaries in two different folders.
I was thinking of make a symlink between the two with the command:
Code:
su ln -s [path to directory with dictionary] [path to the empty directory]
Described here as well.
But it does not seem to work at all. Does anyone have a clue.

Prerequisite for anyone who wants to try: rooted w super user installed, Busy box installed, Terminal emulator installed.

I owned an Onyx i86 ML Plus for a few days, but I have now sent it back. On paper it was brilliant - open Android, Google Play store, an 8 inch screen at 250 ppi - not far short of the screen resolution on my Kindle Voyage; 8 GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot; and frontlit. Even the ribbed left hand side made it easier to hold.

In practice, though, it was a disappointment at almost every level. The space available for apps is half a GB and this filled up very quickly. The Kindle App didn't work properly at first and many of my books didn't show up in the Cloud section of the app where they should be when not downloaded. Apps would constantly crash and eventually, after two factory resets within two days to try to solve this, no app would open at all and the system would let me download only one app (Kindle) before saying the memory was too low to download any more. Even the onboard OReader wouldn't open. A real disappointment.

I'm now looking at the Indiegogo campaign for the Icarus Illumina XL and pondering whether to get it when my refund comes through. While it has a much lower screen resolution, this may not matter much for just reading the printed word. But I'm nervous now whether the great specs (other than the screen resolution) will really translate into reality on this one either.

I am still running mine on Android 4.0 so mango isn't showing in playstore.

I posted several pictures earlier of manga on Comicrack.
It should look the same as ComicRack though if you update the firmware and operating system to run it.

@john hopper - in future update to kitkat will be 6gb available for programs and data and your issue ( too much installed programs ?) probably will be fixed.

Fyi, Mango isn't in the store anymore, you need to download the apk from the site (it should be 4.0 compatible, AFAIK).

Hello everyone!
Just got my device 2 days ago and I really like it.
The are two issues I'd like to solve,
1 - is there a way to control backlight outside of the home screen or apps designed with it? that is, some backlight widget in the status bar so I can access it from whatever app I use?
2 - I would really like to have the screensaver transparent so I could keep reading the page I was on while the device sleeps. Does anyone have an idea how to make that happen? I achieved that on my old nook NST by hacking framework.jar, and would probably try it on the boox eventually when I find the time, unless there is already a solution.

Thanks, Niv.

I think it could be done in most apps using the round back-button located on the center down bezel. Long press toggle on/off
just added it to the wiki as well.

I think he meant adjusting the brightness level in user apps. Am I right ?
