pre-ordered a phone... I just couldn't withstand that Lumia 950XL! And after spending that money, no way my husband would have done nothing if I had also ordered "another" tablet (he thinks the ones I have should be enough already as it is... ) |

Well . . . you wanted to get the i86+, but you seemed hesitant from your posts. Maybe, by the time you're ready for another e-reader, e-readers would have eliminated must of the issues that make them clumsy nowadays. That's very optimistic prediction given how slowly e-readers seem to be evolving. BTW, how much do you like your T68 ?

				It's a Freescale Sololite A9

It's a single core A9 from Freescale. It's a low-power chipset. The decision to go with Freescale probably has to do with their proprietary driver policies. It's a good choice for an e-reader. However, Onyx has the governor set to performance, which runs the processor at its max speed.

Today is the promised day by UPS to deliver the item . . . and surprise . . . I still don't have it. What's even more disconcerting is the fact that the UPS tracking page hasn't been updated for 5 days. Well, I guess, this is another reason why DHL is more expensive ! UPS seems to be handling their promises with levity !

I got my i86+ today. Congratulations to me !!! After loading a couple of my PDFs and DJVUs, I decided to check out the frontlight. Before I say my impression on the frontlight, I must first admit that this is my first e-ink device which has a frontlight. So, I can't compare the frontlight on the i86+ with those on the kindles or the kobos. I wanted to record a video, but the camera on my smartphone doesn't record well in low light conditions. I also tried to take a series of photographs as the brightness intensity is incrementally raised, but again my camera seems to automatically adjust as the light intensity changes. So, I ended up taking just two photos. I have to say the frontlight is better than what I was expecting it to be. Nate's review was particular about the 'splotchy'ness of the frontlight. It is true that the frontlight is not perfectly uniform and you can tell that the bottom frame of the screen is slightly brighter, but I don't think it is distracting in any way. I was also surprised that the light color is white because on some of the photos that Nate shared, the light appeared to have a bluish tinge. In summary, if you're not easily pissed off by every small disorder in life, I don't think you'll be disappointed by the frontlight. PS: The camera I used made the slight non-uniformity in the frontlight much more pronounced. Last edited by medwatt; 10-23-2015 at 08:50 PM. |

I decided to update to new firmware (1.7.3 dev). Changes from 1.7.3 rc1 what I noticed so far: - screen update rate is noticeable faster when do not perform whole screen refresh. I now see animation which on rc1 was skipped by low screen fps (e.g. icon swipe animation, google play animations) - red led glows when WIFI or Bluetooth is turned on. - fixed volume button press boost bug. - disks IO operations seems to be little higher than before. - new Google Play icon. Allow me to say that the i86 + Orion viewer = a match made in heaven. I'll try to record a video tomorrow just to shown how awesome the Orion viewer is on the i86. Wow . . . page turning is super fast and you can open 100mb+ PDFs in about the same time it takes to open 5mb PDFs!! Last edited by medwatt; 10-23-2015 at 09:47 PM. |

I would not expect otherwise. No (sensible) PDF reader loads the entire document into memory, so the time it takes to open a PDF should be independent of its size. What the speed will depend on is how complex the rendering of the page is, but that is of course not dependent upon the overall size of the file.
