Perhaps the trade-off is between evenness of light and blurriness for larger front light layers. Maybe you have to make the layer thicker and/or increase the scattering to make the light even over the larger area. If so, that bodes poorly for the 13.3" reader.

I don't see that as something that couldn't be solved by running rows of LEDs along more than one edge. Some engineering problems merely require money thrown at them.

I'm afraid it looks like they're all sold out, but here's the guy's eBay and Amazon seller pages, in case he gets more. All he's got left ATM are cases. I notice there's another guy on eBay trying to scalp one for $700, which is ridiculous. I paid $279 for mine.

Hi,

Yes. It is ridiculous... In the German shop the price is similar than you bought...

Thank you very much!

Your review on it was fantastic, by the way. While you did conclude on the note that the i86 was better in almost every aspect to the competing 8" e-reader, other than the backlight, I am left with the impression that those who don't care about the backlight should be very happy with it.

I'm hoping you hang onto your i86 until Android 4.4 releases on it, so you can do a follow up review.

My only problem with the backlight on mine is that I sometimes accidentally turn it on, so I would absolutely agree with your assessment.

I've received the following msg from distributor:

Quote:
Unexpectedly manufacturer informed us today about some problems in quality control (concerns screens with front light from PVI - EINK screen supplier). By random control before delivery (spot tests) of the produced batch Onyx controllers discovered, that the light layer of some screens has got tiny but noticeable light points, which could lead to complains from customers. These points could be only be visible when the front light is on.
Since Onyx International is very anxious to deliver the best possible quality to his customers, they paused the delivery and want to check and revise complete batch. Therefore they asked us to allow them additional 10-12 days to be able to revise the batch.
So maybe in next batch they fix this issue ( splotchy frontlight screen )..

I'm not too bother by the screen, mostly because I don't use the backlight too often and maybe my copy doesn't seem too bad to my eyes. Overall I'm satisfied with the device, though there are a bunch of quirks that needs to be worked out on the software end.

"Pinpoints" sounds more like impact damage on the frontlight.
