For the serial number, you can get away without updating it. The image should have it set to all zeros. But, you can set it using a binary editor. The serial number is at offset 0x200. That starts with "SN-" followed by the serial number.

The device works again. This is recycling at its best. All these defective devices would have been for the garbage can. You have saved them. Thank you for that.

Hi @davidfor I hope you are well, you helped me a few years back get my original kobo back up and running and it has been a great servant but I "upgraded" to a Kobo Touch N905C which now won't boot and I'd like to get the original SD image if I may to try and bring it back to life.
