Well, I have it on default, but setting it to 15 did not solve the issue.

More details about the issue:
The stories get downloaded fine if they are one-shots and if they are downloaded one at a time (both conditions need to be fulfilled at the same time). If you queue multiple FF.net stories, or try downloading a multichapter story or making an anthology, FFF will throw out an error after downloading the first chapter. I.e. FFF is now only able to download a single chapter a time, no matter how many (and how long) fics are queued.

Here, some stories I tested right now in all possible combinations:
1 chapter, 1 chapter, 2 chapters.

Ascello, for whatever reason, you've probably gotten on a watch or block list that isn't affecting everyone.

Your best bets are to use Browser Cache feature or just not download from there for a while.

this will ensure it's grabbing from cache rather than falling back to the website.

Or it could have been a problem from ff.net, i had the same problem earlier today but now it work again.

I had the same error earlier today, but it has since gone back to normal. Fortunately, I have yet to really need the browser cache feature, though I'm glad it's there if I ever really need it.

The error refers to I'm Under Attack Mode, and it's been seen in the past that FanFiction.net sometimes enables it when working on the site. While I see no mention of the site itself, they did update their iOS app today.

As I was the one to post about this earlier today, I can say that FFF now works ... I suspect the reason cited by ownedbycats is what happened.

If you can browse fanfiction.net on your browser without issue, you could also try the nsapa_proxy.
It is slow but it works.

Personally, the only one I ever change is Update Mode.

For example, does anyone run with 'Update Calibre Metadata' unchecked? Or change output format on individual downloads?

I basically never change the options on each individual download. Very occasionally - often related to when a site does not work or I am on a VPN - I toggle the background metadata option (usually as part of my long-time computer experience - "if I toggle something, and try again, it just might work. Right?. Right?!").

If you feel that it would be better to consolidate almost all options to be global, rather than per-download, feel free to go ahead. I know how much a bother multiple setting levels can be, especially when users report problems, often without mentioning what settings they are using. "Why, of course I am using IE6 to access your React front-end, doesn't everyone?"

1. Output - Never change. Epub, Calibre can convert to whatever I want and I find having a standardized epub makes it easy.

2. Update mode. Occasionally change, not often, but enough that it's useful to have it there.

3. Update Calibre Metadata - Never change. Honestly, while I know there might be reasons NOT to updated Metadata, I can't think of any myself. I'm a bit of a digital horder and I like to have all that data updated.

4. Update Epub Cover - Never change it. It's checked, but I barely notice it on fanfics, I never cover browse them, just go directly to the book jacket on my kindle/kobo.

5. Background Metadata - ... Actually had to go find the option and read the description so I knew what it was. It's checked and never touched. I dont understand why there's an option there, but in my personal experience I check 'failed' downloads and always find out why, then fix it, so the option isn't something I'll probably ever change.
