I could add optional code to do this, but the questions then are: a) Should it only be for photobucket? b) Should it be a configurable pattern so it can be applied for other sites, too? c) Is this really common enough to bother with? And d) Is this a general solution even for photobucket? Two is not a very large sample set.

I don't know the answers to c or d unfortunately, but if it is implemented, I think a configurable pattern would be the best way to do it.

I've been running into an issue downloading from FFnet. Sometimes some fics download fine. Some get the 'chapters have errors' message and all but one chapter will have errors according to the log. I haven't been able to figure out whether length or number of chapters matters.

That is the best answer I have for the problem report given.

What are the errors reported? What are a few story URLs they happen with? Run Calibre in debug mode, then try it and post the debug log.

As of ~Dec 2020, the site fanfiction.net has started using the Cloudflare service for protection from automated attackers.

Unfortunately, the distinction between 'automated attacker' and 'automated download tool' (such as FanFicFare) is a fine one.

FanFicFare uses the public version of cloudscraper to help work with Cloudflare, and for some users that is sufficient. (Note that the versions of OpenSSL bundled in Calibre prior to Calibre v5 are too old for Cloudflare and cloudscraper will not work.)

However, for many users (especially heavy users or those on 'untrusted' networks), Cloudflare blocks more aggressively than can be easily automated around. That's not surprising--it is their intention, after all.

To side-step the issue of automated download while still allowing users the benefits of FanFicFare, I've implemented the Browser Cache Feature in FanFicFare v4 (for fanfiction.net only at this time). See the Browser Cache Feature wiki page for further details.

I still strongly recommend using email notifications for updates rather than using FanFicFare update to check for new chapters on lots of books.
Your log does, however, point out that errors for continue_on_chapter_error are not being recorded in the log (you can see in the ebook). In the next test version I will include code to add those errors to the log, too.

I am 99% sure that you are running into the cloudflare issue.

In case that other 1% comes up, I've posted a new test version that will also record each chapter error in the log. The test version and instructions on how to install it are here.

For what it matters, continuing to hammer the site with requests is probably not productive. Once Cloudflare flags an IP as suspicious, it takes a few weeks of non-suspicious activity before it drops the extra restrictions that break FFF. At worst, you may be extending that time every time you try to re-download.

Using the browser cache is your best option, even if it's a little annoying at times.

when modifying chapter_title_strip_pattern, will Update Always fix the existing ones or do I need to overwrite? I tried it and it didn't work and I'm not sure if it was that or if I made a mistake.

I was trying to turn "2. Chapter 1: Title" (there was a prologue chapter) to just "Chapter 1: Title" (but keep "1. Another Title" intact) and I had some difficulty understanding how to do this from the defaults.ini comments
