It's not really that bad, certainly not as bad as ZP's shums. These guys are usually pretty quiet, so it's not a huge deal. Besides, I don't really want to get into a noise war with them, although I've got some Godsmack and Rob Zombie that would probably do the trick.

I never knew it had been used by a choreographer, I'd love to see that!
I only know it from the Arditti String Quartet CD (which I've just dug out for a listen).

oh, believe me, if you ever do get the chance to see it, it's well worth it. assuming you like contemporary dance, of course. preljocaj is not for everyone, but then neither is stockhausen, so i think you would probably enjoy it. i thought it was absolutely brilliant, and if i recall on the same program we saw a version of Le Sacre du Printemps which i liked somewhat less than the original choreography by Nijinsky, but that is hardly a condemnation because i adore Nijinsky's work and that one is possibly my favorite choreography ever.

Modern Parisians take a different view than the ones at the premiere then .

The BBC made a drama about the premiere called 'Riot at the Rite' - very entertaining!

hee ! to be honest i secretly wish i could have seen that premiere... i just can't imagine a bunch of posh opera goers in evening dress hurling their red velours chairs at the stage as the dancers duck and scuttle for cover !! it must have been quite spectacular, don't you think ?? in a way i admire their passion ; i've seen some pretty bad shows but today at the worst all you get is people sneaking out before the end, while the others give them dirty looks and make loud sighs to express their disapproval and condemnation. the ones who stay all the way through will even applaud at the end, presumably because it's expected of them. i can think of a couple of times a riot would have been justified. tolerance and broad-mindedness is good but complacency is another thing, even where culture is concerned.

i'd love to see that BBC drama, i'll have to look for it. is it available on dvd, do you know ? i love the BBC.

Don't think it's out on DVD - but there are a few clips on YouTube.

There was much bumping and grinding going on in front of over half a million people (actually present - more watching on the telly, as it used to be the most-watched event on telly for the year). That was my 15 minutes (actually about an hour or two, and I was only one of thousands, but I did get on the telly, much to my family's surprise), and I'm pretty sure Andy won't give me another.

Ahh, memories...I remember the after-party, and managing to dance through the entire night (like an angry, uncoordinated gibbon), without the assistance of chemical stimulant. I don't think Everlasting Night (extended version) by Danii Minogue will ever leave the backing soundtrack of my thoughts. I think I might try sync' it up with the iTunes version right now...

thanks for the tip sparrow ! i've just been watching some excerpts on youtube (when i should be in bed... hmm.. perhaps i shouldn't thank you after all !). it's quite impressive, although it's a bit strange that they're all speaking (and yelling) in english.

it makes you appreciate the courage of nijinski and stravinski at a time when being avant-garde was really taking a risk.

and despite the shouting it's a pleasure to see the choreography again and hear the music. people thought they were insane but they were geniuses.

If I want to be evil, I'll probably toss on some Magma (from "Mekhanik Destruktiw Kommandoh", or perhaps White Noise.

If I want to be really evil, I'll put on the Charles River Valley Boys bluegrass version of "Yellow Submarine". "We all live in a yeller submarine, a yeller submarine, a yeller submarine..."

It's one of those tracks guaranteed to bring all conversation in a room to a screeching "WTF is that?" halt...

i've found a review of the preljocaj programme Helikopter + Sacre du Printemps by the New York Times :
NEXT WAVE FESTIVAL REVIEW; Sexuality From France, Arriving by Helicopter
Quote:
"Helikopter,'' however, turns out to be the major piece. At his most typical, Mr. Preljocaj is as conceptually oriented as he is emotionally expressive. His focus on atavistic and sexual instinct, seen not only in ''Rite'' but also in many of his other works, is invariably set within a cerebral framework. Highly physical movement and partnering within rigorous structures convey this two-sided aesthetic. ''Helikopter'' is nonetheless Mr. Preljocaj's most formal work, electrifying in its blend of sound, film and movement.
and guess what else, you can find some clips on youtube. they are mostly of le sacre du printemps but i found one (sadly, very short, and a bit choppy) clip of helikopter.

I have about 1,500 albums, and at least half are so obscure I'm the only person I know who has even heard of them. I normally listen with headphones. I don't expect others to share my enthusiasms.

If I have to resort to dueling loudspeakers, I have the ammunition, but it's been years since I had to do combat mixes.

and "trying to convince you to move into my building, in order to drive away the horrid neighbors" pulls into the lead with the revelation of headphones AND big speakers, to be used according to circumstances. so what do you think ? you could use a change, right ? and the weather here is so... ahem, i mean, we get a lot of really good concerts !!!

Gil Scott-Heron "Is That Jazz"

Basie was never really commonplace
He was always measures ahead.
Ellington was more than number one
For the music and things that he said.
Bird was the word back when tenors were heard
From Kansas right up to the Prez
And Billie was really the Queen of a scene
That keeps echoing on in my head.

What it has will surely last but is that Jazz?

Miles had a style that amazes and raises
The spirits from deep in your soul.
'Trane struck a vein of laughter and pain
Adventures the mind could explore.
Stevie and Bob talk of freedom and 'Jah'
In their own individual ways.
Playing and singing as long as its bringing
A message is all that it says.

What is has will surely last but is that Jazz?

We overanaylze we let others define
A thousand precious feelings from our past.
When we express love and tenderness
Is that Jazz? Is that Jazz? Is that Jazz? Is that Jazz?
Dizzy's been busy while Grover gets us over
With notes that go straight to the heart.
Brother Ron gets it on with a bassline so strong
That the sounds seem to glow in the dark.
I take pride in what's mine - is that really a crime -
When you know I ain't got nothing else?
Only millions of sounds picks me up when I'm down;
Let me salvage a piece of myself.

What it has will surely last but is that Jazz?
