Calibre, MS Shell Dlg 2 missing :(

Where are you getting this error in calibre? The only time I've seen it is when the font substitution table has an invalid entry in it.

MS Shell Dialog 2 is a logical font. In the registry is a entry that says which font to use when MS Shell Dlg 2 is specified. if you look under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\FontSubstitutes, you should find entries for both the old MS Shell Dlg and MS Shell Dlg 2. I did a quick check and exported a .reg file for those two entries. Rename the font_substitution.reg.txt file attached to this message to font_substitution.reg and import it to set those two values. You will need to restart Windows after importing this file to have the changes take effect.

But I don't understand, the font disappeared (in Calibre) from the list of available fonts when I updated Calibre to the latest version. Your .reg did not solve the problem

@Lauraq - can you see the font in any other software, I recall seeing it somewhere, probably Word, once upon a time, but I can't see it now -- pretty sure I never made any use if it.

Given that MS Shell Dlg 2 is really Tahoma, you could just select Tahoma as your font.

I just looked in c:\windows\fonts

Not there in W10 Pro

Calibre can't use what ain't there.

(It offers from OS INSTALLED FONTS)

ms shell dlg is not an actual font. It's a virtual font that resolves to whatever the UI font set in window is. If it isnt showing up for you simply pick Segoe UI which is the windows UI font instead.

dont' know "ms shell dlg is not an actual font" but Segoe UI it's different. What I can say is that BEFORE this font was there and it was the most beautiful I had found and now it is gone. Can you put it back please? Thank you

Tell you what, you find a font file named ms shell dlg 2 and post it to me and I will put it back in calibre.

Yes it is the same because MS Shell Dlg 2 is defined in the registry as Tahoma. I've looked at the registry code that @DNSB posted and in my registrya dn yes, they both are Tahoma.

It's a font that I know and like but the other one was fine because (knowing the same size) it fit the size of my monitor perfectly. If it were as you say why would they have put both? Obviously they are different in something

It is as I say because that's the font used when you select MS Shell Dlg 2. It's not because I say. It's how Microsoft has defined what font is used.

At sometime in Windows history, YOU could set the font used by the system (theme) System and DLG2 picked up those (that is why it is LOGICAL. It use real fonts)

(Windows) All Settings:Personalization: fonts
see if you spot your favorite there.
