MS tries to maintain backwards compatibility, which allows people like me to run 25 year old software on the current version of Windows. Some platforms wont even run software developed 10 years ago let alone last century.

@Lauraq - have a look at MS Reference Sans Serif, to my not very good eyes it seems a bit 'sharper' than my MS Shell Dlg2 (Tahoma).

thanks but now I search the name of the real font in the regedit, I wait to know where from JSWolf So I solve all the problem

Are you telling me that Windows, based on my hair color or my nails, decides which font to use?

I don't know what Qt6 is but I know that the problem is caused by the latest version of Caliber because the previous version shows the font that I use. So a change was made by the creators of Caliber which disabled the use of the font, I ask if it is possible to restore it. And please don't make me look like a madwoman asking for absurd and unattainable things. Otherwise I'll keep the old version of Caliber
Qt is a software component that calibre uses to manage the user interface - windows, fonts, icons etc etc, etc. It is widely used by applications that run on multople platforms (Windows, Linux, Macs, Unix etc)

Amongst other things Windows makes its decisions regarding Substitute Fonts on what language settings you use. Microsoft have 'discontinued' the ongoing use of Substitute Fonts, the continued support for them is to allow older application software to continue to run.

If you look in the registry at this location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\FontSubstitutes\MS Shell Dlg2 you will see which 'real' font is mapped to the substitute font MS Shell Dlg2. In my case it is Tahoma.

No, the bug was fixed in Qt6. Previously, it was reporting fonts that do not actually exist on the machine. It appears that the Qt team decided that was wrong. And from my quick checks, the only thing that shows the font in discussion is older versions of calibre. That suggests that the change is the correct one.

is INCREDIBLE
The Font assigned like MS Shell Dlg 2 in my Pc is Tahoma. When I change the font to Tahoma, in the Calibre old version, the font is perfect BUT when I use Tahoma in the new Calibre the font is different and, in the result, I must scroll for see the cover. So, the problem don't is the font but something else that has been changed in the latest version of Calibre

On the right side, look at MS Shell Dlg 2 and see what the font name is.

No, Windows is not choosing it based on your hair colour, nails or anything else. But, you might be choosing to do so.

Please actually read what has been said. The font existed a long time ago. MS removed it and put a logical font in. The selected font could be changed. How, I don't know, but, somewhere it probably was user selectable. And I am sure that the exact font MS chose to substitute has changed at least once with the different versions of Windows.

A new version of calibre was released. Not just a minor version bump, but, a major version change. You should expect things to change when that happens. Some of those things you will like, some you will not.

In this particular case, the version of one of the libraries that calibre uses was changed. This is Qt. This meant a lot of things happening. It means getting bug fixes, but, it also means getting changes that are not as desirable. In this case, something is happening you don't like. As has been stated, it will not be reverted as it would mean reverting most of the changes in calibre 6. And not going ahead with the update to Qt6 would mean not being able to support newer operating systems.

At this point, you will have to accept that it is changed. You choice is either to go back to calibre 5.44, or choose another font. As people have told you how to find what the actual font that was being used when you selected "MS Shell Dlg2" is, you can easily update to this. Or, experiment a bit and see if there is a font you prefer.

In the screenshot of Calibre 5.44, the font size is 12pt.

Another thing that could be different is that Qt6 decides the scale for you. So it could have decided to choose a different scale and maybe that needs to be turned off.

If after setting the font to Tahoma 12pt and it doesn't look the same, you can try setting the following environment variable.

Code:
QT_ENABLE_HIGHDPI_SCALING=0
Here's how to set environment variables in Windows.

From the search (taskbar), search for Advanced System Settings and proceed to step 4 for Windows 10 and step 5 for Windows 11.
