Exclamation Time for the major game update?

Hi Mark & kartu,

Are we ready to update the games in the main repository? I am happy to do it. I'll have to create a new local repository, copy over the new and updated games (and the AppAssets) folder, and then do the commit. That way, none of my other customisations will be included.

Sincerely,
Ben.

Ben,

if all apps work on both touch / button devices, sure.
A while ago I tried to pull latest apps rep, but it didn't quite work on the readers. Haven't had time to try it after that.

Hi kartu,

Before committing, I will try on my 600, just to make sure. But as Marc said in a post on Google Groups (here), the latest versions of the games have been successfully tested on 505 and 650 (Marc), 350 (TJ27) and 600 (me).

Sincerely,
Ben.

Hi kartu,

I have just pushed the changes. In the end, to make totally sure about using the right file versions, I made new local repositories of both the main branch and the apps branch of the repository, then copied from the apps branch to the main branch, and made the appropriate changes to the config files. I then tested by building for the 600. It installed on my reader fine, and all the games worked. I hope it works for you, too!

Sincerely,
Ben.

Hi VictorSJG,

The save game folder is not included in the PRS+ installer. It gets created when you save or activate the game for the first time. However, if you want to move your existing save games (I certainly did!), you can find (or create) the folder manually. The path is

\database\system\PRSPlus\GamesSave

on the main drive of the Reader (the one you copy the PRS+ installer onto). Then in this folder, you can create five folders for the games that use saves:

Chess
FiveBalls
Mahjong
MineSweeper
Sudoku

As always, make sure you get the case right. Then you can move the save files from the root directory into their correct folders.

Hope that makes sense!

Sincerely,
Ben.

New App: Calendar

Hi everyone,

I was bored, so I thought I would give a Calendar app a go. I've pushed the result to the app repository.

A couple of points:
- I am mainly focusing on a Touch version. It works for non-Touch, but I haven't made labels or hid touch buttons, etc. Pressing Next and Prev moves through months; holding down Next and Prev moves through years. You can't get to "Today" as easily. And you can't move the cursor yet, or click to see event information. If people are interested, I can do those things.
- Edit and Clear buttons do not do anything yet. I think I hit a limit as to what the Sim can do. I am hoping that someone might know how I can get the Reader's system keyboard to appear and pass the result back. Otherwise, I may have to make my own keyboard (which presumably will be English only). What this means is that at the moment you can only add events by editing the textfile on a PC. (I can provide some more information for the format of this file if people are interested.)
- I know that if there are more than one event on a particular day, then there will be problems. So if you have a birthday on Christmas, I think you will be able to see them, but only the Christmas icon will display. And if we do eventually get editing going, then that will cause even more problems as to which event to edit. Actually, it would be good to have a list of events, but I don't know if a listbox is built in or not!

By the way, I dreaded getting into this, because of the can of worms it would open up "feature-request"-wise. Can I just say right from the start, that I do NOT plan to implement .ics compatibility or Google-calendar syncing!

Sincerely,
Ben.

Oh, another thing is that I have not yet tried this on my 600. I actually have no idea whether the retrieval of today's date will work. The code declares the following variables:

Code:
var today = new Date(); // Date object to store the current date
var todaysDay = today.getDay() + 1; // Stores the current day number 1-7
var todaysDate = today.getDate(); // Stores the current numeric date within the month
var todaysMonth = today.getUTCMonth() + 1; // Stores the current month 1-12
var todaysYear = today.getFullYear(); // Stores the current year
It works in the Sim, but will it work on the Reader?!?

Sincerely,
Ben.

That was brave of you. The fact that "September 2011" was displayed tells me that today's date didn't load. I will need to do some experimenting, I see...

Ben.

Hi there,

I just pushed the start-up file for the Calendar app. This wasn't needed for the Sim (so I didn't think of it), but it is required on the readers. I hope this gets the app working. (I checked the date code and I now think it should work on the reader, based on the Statusbar clock code.)

Sincerely,
Ben.

I am interested in the dictionary for the version non-touch (PRS-505/300), is enough for me to generate the dictionary without event functions, but would be interesting an function to show Monday as the first day of the week.

Thanks!!

Hi everyone,

I found the error: it was something missing in the start-up script. I have now tested the calendar on my 600 and it works fine (as long as you don't want to edit or clear events!). I have pushed the changes to the apps repository.

I will consider if it is possible to re-configure the calendar to display Monday as the first day of the week. But it might take a few days.

Sincerely,
Ben.
