It downloaded fine for me, and the lack of other people screaming suggests it's not a universal problem--as does effecting multiple sites for you.

If you try again with Calibre in debug mode (see Calibre Preferences drop down) and post the debug log, I'll be better able to help you. [SPOILER] and [CODE] tags are recommended.

it looks like the latest Generate Cover plugin update (29Jul16) is the actual culprit I uninstalled it and now everything works fine (I can live without the GC plugin)

basic troubleshooting... undo all updates to see if the problem changes

It seems to be a combination of FFF and the latest Generate Cover, because both work fine on their own, but Generate Cover being called by FFF when downloading fic seems to be the problem.

Not sure if it will help, but attached is the previous version of Generate Cover, this won't have the change (by Kovid) related to the problem of ampersands.

How come I have it - happened to be lying around on my backup drive

Added: I removed the zip in light of Kovid's post.

Oops, my fault -- I really should not perform maintenance on plugins I dont use -- but the GC plugin was accessing the calibre library in an unsafe way, fixing that is what caused this bug. I have made a new release of GC that should take care of it.

The Generate Cover 1.5.21 update appears to work with FFF for me, thanks Kovid. I love it when problems are already fixed by the time I get back to them.

author, not authors. Support for multiple authors was added long after the metadata name was set. And, of course, your custom column should be set to be names--see attached.

The error appears to be the quotev.com server giving a bad response. I'll look at it more detail tomorrow, but no promises I'll be able to do anything about it.

Long thread, so forgive me if this has been asked an answered.

I haven't used fanfic.net in a couple of years, but I seem to remember being able to download all the stories by a specific author, by clicking Get Story URLs from webpage. (I think that's how I did it!) Now, however, when I try the same action, it's also trying to pull down stories from other tabs on the author's page- specifically their own bookmarked/favorited stories. Is there a setting somewhere that I'm missing, or is this just how the plug in works now? I really only want the 20odd stories an author has written, not the 200+ stories they loved.

You'll have to manually copy and paste the URLs. The feature simply grabs the page's HTML and attempts to download all URLs for which an adapter matched -- if the source includes all story URLs and the list of displayed stories is modified by JavaScript, you'll run into the problems you described.

Actually, there is a way: After you get to the author's web page on fanfiction.net, click on your address bar and change it from www.fanfiction.net to m.fanfiction.net. On the mobile version, the author's own works and favorites are different pages.

A couple tweaks that appear to make quotev.com happier, including a deliberate connection slow down.
