Would you believe ebook? Even at that price, both author and publisher make a smidge more than they do from a printed copy.

However, ebooks apparently make up around 1% of all book sales, so I won't be putting a down payment on a luxury yacht just yet.

I blogged about that ludicrous Amazon price about three years ago. Why am I not surprised that copy is still for sale? ;-)

I have a serious problem. I've just finished Hal Spacedock and I want more. I'm armed with a loaded credit card and show a willful disregard for its health. But disaster! I can't buy more books.

Sir. I desire a monetary transaction. I will furnish you with monies in return for Hal and Clunk setting fire to more things. Please speak with your publisher forthwith.

With any luck Hal and Clunk won't have set fire to the internet (or your credit card) before you get to read more ...

Cheers

Hey Simon!

Glad to hear about the other Spacejock ebooks, I resisted reading the first as I was worried about getting access to the sequels.

I came across your books from the opposite direction though, as I am fan of your yWriter software. I downloaded it first a couple years back, I took a hiatus and just recently came back to grab yWriter 5. I wrote a great deal when I was a teenager but as an adult I never managed more then a page or so before calling it quits. While looking around at writing software I found that either they wanted to write the book for me, wanted me to spend more time interacting with the software then writing or just were glorified word processors. yWriter was the first thing that I've managed to get a coherent story going with.

Because of that I had wanted to buy your books as a Thank You, so I am glad they will soon be available. As for the publishers concerns about illegal downloads, tell them chances are your books are already available on IRC, your increased popularity will simply bring them to the surface, and won't actually be resulting in any lost sales. Most likely they will aid sales.

BTW, they're not direct sequels. Each book is a standalone, and after the first it doesn't really matter which order you read them in, although you might miss a gag or two. (E.g. in the fourth book one of the characters says they've met enough villains to fill three second-rate novels.)

Is there any more news about the ebook releases? I'm having to work my way through my "To read" pile when what I really want to do is read more Hal Spacejock

Will the new book be available to buy in ebook format when it's released in dead tree?

There was a week's delay while they added Paypal - I'm hoping it'll be announced this coming week. (Monday is a public holiday here in Western Australia.) Next week is read-an-ebook week so it'll be good timing.

I've suggested Book 5 be released in print and ebook at the same time, but the publisher has the rights and it's their decision. I have a little more influence with my publisher than many authors, from the sound of it, but they still hold all the cards.

I don't want to raise any false hopes but I heard from the publisher today, and it looks like the official release for the rest of the Spacejock ebooks is Monday the 9th of March. (That's Western Australia, which is 16 hours ahead of much of the US timezone-wise.)

In case you didn't know, you can purchase the entire John Grimes series in a variety of DRM-free ebook formats over at Webscriptions.net. They're certainly great fun.

I tried to find you guys a link to David D Levine's short story, Titanium Mike Saves the Day, but it doesn't seem to be available for download anymore. It seems to be something similar that you might also enjoy.

BTW, at his website, Levine also says he will have a story in Diamonds in the Sky that has been worked on here at MR in the past week or two.
