Oh! No! I failed...

I had no idea my holidays were going to be so exciting... My quitting smoking will just have to wait for another week at least.

I have spent most of the week with my daughter, which is very rare, although we normally chat every day on MSN, and we decided right now is not the time. In fact I doubt she's going to give up with me, so I'll be going it alone, and I can do that, not just now.

I have, though, cut the amount I smoke in half, but I want to give it up altogether, but I'm not letting anyone know next time... I really hated having to write this...

Don't give up lene! You said you cut it in half, that's great! Now in that week or so, cut it in half again. Then again. Pretty soon it will be super easy to quit as you won't be in the habit of smoking so many a day.

Great, 50 in half is 25!
For a smoker cutting down to 14/day is a big effort but it keeps the level of nicotine bearable. To do that I got my self a cigarette case, with a detailed time table. I filled it in the evening. A useful trick is to delay as much as possible the time you smoke your first in the morning.

I am with you.

At least you have made up your mind to quit, most of the time that is half the battle in itself. The time will present itself and when it does let us know and we'll all help as best we can!!

I have a friend who literally cut her smoking in half - borrowed a cigar cutter - and cut all her cigarettes in half! Didn't end up helping - but it was a novel approach.

I didn't tell anyone when I intended to quit smoking except one friend at work who I took smoke breaks with sometimes (didn't want her thinking I was mad at her) and my family. I told my family not to even acknowledge in my presence that I was trying to quit.

In my case, I didn't want the constant badgering from friends and family of:

"how are you doing with that quitting?,"
"how much have you smoked today?,"
"how many cigarettes are you down to now?,"
"have you thrown out your cigarettes yet?,"
"I thought you were quitting, but you're having a cigarette."
blah, blah, blah.

For me, that kind of "support" wouldn't have worked, it would have made things worse. I didn't need people watching me, counting the cigarettes I smoked, noting the times I didn't smoke and mentioning it, bringing attention to it all the time. Just keep your mouth shut and don't say a word.

But that's just me (and it worked better that way.)

yeah, I didn't tell anybody either. INCLUDING family! it took some family members over 3 weeks to notice that I HAD successfully quit! but I simply didn't need the queries/nagging and so on

I quit about 15 years ago. My mother had a cancer relapse and I told her I'd quit with her. I quit - she didn't.

I used a product that was basically a giant cigarette filter. It was the same size as a normal cigarette, but was all filter. I put a couple in an empty pack and carried them around with me. Whenever I wanted a cigarette, I put one in my mouth and hit on it. It felt right, but I was only sucking air. It really got me through all those daily triggers that prompted a smoke.

When my wife was quitting, I left her to it and she got on without any bother from me.

I did the opposite; I told everyone who had a vested interest at work and did a day-by-day thing on my Facebook.

You didn't "fail", you lapsed; you don't fail unless you give up trying.

Same thing happened to me; got on the phone with my brother and the old habit came back; the part which bothered me most was that I didn't realize what I was doing until my throat started burning after having quit for a week! That was in December, during the holidays, as well. Never happened again.

Seriously, the nicotine is the easy part; it's the habit itself which is the insidious part and which requires more effort.

Yeah! You didn't fail. You succeeded in cutting down by half.
I used to have little rules (I didn't share anything with anybody)
Rule number one... No smoking before Noon. That helped to cut down the number before I actually really stopped altogether. It also made me find ways to fill in my mornings without a smoke, whilst knowing that I could satisfy that craving once 12.00 O'clock came.
