Here's the thing.
I've come to the conclusion that my books want no shameless self-promotion on my part. In fact, my books are very embarrassed by my acts of shameless self-promotion. What my books want, instead, are to be discovered by a BIG PUBLISHER who's convinced they are destined to become HOT SELLERS -- make that BEST SELLERS-- and thus willing to spend unlimited amount of advertising dollars promoting them the RIGHT WAY. Or--and this would work, too--my books would like to be discovered by a BIG MOVIE PRODUCER who will ensure that they are made into critically acclaimed movies that do boffo box office business and win Oscars. Of course, I will have final say over casting decisions. And it goes without saying that my books (and their author) will be mentioned glowingly in sll acceptance speeches. My books also wouldn't mind if a gazillion readers spontaneously decided to purchase, read and LOVE them. So, as a sensitive and serious writer, I have hereby decided to respect my books' feelings, and will immediately cease and desist all acts of shameless promotion. Thank you for your support. |

Oh, forgot to mention that both my books are priced at the amazingly low price of 99 cents.
New Coastal Times is a quirky post-apocalyptic romp through climate changing times. The Haircut, A New Year's Tale is a sensual, whimsical love story set just after Christmas, 1948, in a city that could be New York. Last edited by Donna Callea; 05-05-2010 at 11:13 AM. |

Hi all,
I'll keep this short — just wanted you to know my noir espionage thriller The Losing Role is $1.99 for a limited time on Kindle, Smashwords and others along with my other books. Here's the story: At the end of World War II a failed German actor, Max Kaspar, is forced to join a desperate secret mission in which he must impersonate an enemy American officer. So Max cooks up his own fanatical plan — he'll use his false identity to escape tyranny and war and flee to the America he'd once abandoned. I hope you'll check it out Thanks and happy reading, Steve |

I know you mean well. But it's not helping. I'm trying very hard to deal with my shameless self-promotion habit, which, as I've noted, has proven very embarrassing to my blameless books. Also... I've been thinking, which is something I often do instead of working on my current novel-in-progress (so you can guess how that one is coming along). There's a difference between shameful self-promotion and shameless self-promotion. Shameless implies that a writer is without shame, while a shameful self-promoting writer would obviously be full of shame. So which am I? Not shameless, even though there are those who would say that there's no shame in promoting your own work if no one else will. My books are ashamed of me when I self-promote. They don't think it's very dignified, and it makes them feel cheap. Of course, they are cheap. Just 99 cents. But that's beside the point. So am I a shameful self-promoter? Well, I'm not full of shame. I'm full of something, that's for sure, but it's not shame. Here's a thought. (They come to me randomly) Since I'm compelled to self-promote, I think I'd feel a lot better if I could do it without having to attach a shame-based adjective to the act. Maybe we all would. Why bring up the shame? When you take away the shame, being a self-promoter doesn't sound so bad. In fact, it's akin to being a self-starter, a self-helper, a self-censor... even a self-made success. OK. I feel better now. I'm going to stop thinking now, and start working again on my work-in-progress. Which someday, no doubt, I'll be attempting to proudly self-promote. |
