(Note that as a side-effect of the whole whitelist thingy, and to avoid mixing different jailbreaks, if you want to update the jailbreak, you'll have to *uninstall* it first. So in that case, if you're only interested in the updated whitelist, it's way faster to just overwrite the whitelist from the one in the latest zip).

I don't know what I did wrong, but, as the post title says, for some reason yifanlu's jailbreak didn't work for me. Last week, I uninstalled NiLuJe's screensaver hack, then uninstalled NiLuJe's pre-3.1 firmware jailbreak, installed the 3.1 firmware, installed yifanlu's jailbreak (the only one available at the time) and then installed NiluJe's latest screensaver hack for the Kindle 3 WiFi. All of the updates were successful, per the Kindle, but none of my custom screensavers would show, only the "vanilla Kindle" screensavers were being used by the Kindle after the firmware/jailbreak/screensaver hack installations. I thought maybe, since I had the screensavers set to show randomly, that, for some reason, only the "dead author" screensavers were being chosen, but when some of the Amazon screensavers that I had not included in my linkss folder started showing, I knew that the hack just wasn't working.

Yesterday I uninstalled the screensaver hack, uninstalled yifanlu's jailbreak, installed NiLuJe's jailbreak for 3.1 firmware, reinstalled the screensaver hack, and now all is well.

As I said, I am sure the reason yifanlu's jailbreak didn't work was due to operator error, since it seems to work for everyone else,

, but I wanted to post my experience just in case this might help someone else with a similar problem. Mind you, it could just be that somehow when I installed the screensaver hack I screwed it up - though how I could screw up dropping a file in the root directory I don't know

- so yifanlu's jailbreak had nothing to do with the problem. Anyway, everything is working now.

@ NiLuJe and yifanlu: Thank you both for helping all of us out. I hope you both realize how the community appreciates the thoughtful programming work you do. We certainly benefit from it.

@OakIris: It's much more likely that you did something wrong with the sss hack (forgot to restart when switching files, messed up the trigger file, no custom screensavers, no screensavers at all, wrong directory, ...). If the jailbreak hadn't took, your hack update process would have failed with a U007 error. If the update is successful, that means the jailbreak did it's stuff.

@NiLuJe: Have you tried an integrity check on CJK.ttf file lately? I cannot open it with Windows7 default font viewer. I think it used to open without a problem.

I installed the jailbreak and ss hack somewhere around Kindle 3.02. Before I add Kindle 3.1, do I need to uninstall the jailbreak and ss hack? If so, where can I get those uninstall files? I didn't save them, unfortunately.

Then I would install 3.1 on the kindle and the new jailbreak/ss hack?

I did notice the install .bin files are a bit bigger in .6.N. In addition to the whitelist file being bigger, I noticed the "3.1-install.sh" file is larger as well. I took a quick look at it, and it seems you did some extra whitelist checking/processing there.

Anything else I'm missing, or will I get the same functionality as a fresh install of .6.N if I simply copy the whitelist file in the zip's src directory into the Kindle's filesystem?

First i installed the v0.4.N jailbreak, then update official 3.1 firmware, can i install the 0.6N jailbreak now? and how can i uninstall the 0.4N jailbreak ?

@Hollow Man: You'll get the same thing with just an updated whitelist.

@kindle3_speed: Just install a newer jailbreak on top of what you have here. The uninstall/install thing is only needed with newer jailbreaks (ie. yifanlu's or >= 0.5.N).

Well, I did say it was no doubt operator error! I have no idea what I did wrong. I didn't make any changes to any of the files, let alone the trigger file and all of my custom screensaver files were still on the Kindle in the linkss/screensavers directory. All I did was drop the K3 WiFi ss hack install.bin file in the root directory of my Kindle after successfully installing yifanlu's jailbreak, updated the Kindle, just as always after putting a .bin file on the Kindle, restarted the kindle after receiving the update successful message, and my custom screensavers did not show up. I did the exact same thing after installing your new jailbreak and reinstalling the screensaver hack, and the hack started working.

I was thinking that maybe I grabbed the wrong ss file to drop in the Kindle's root directory after installing yifanlu's jailbreak, but then I shouldn't have gotten the update successful message if it was the wrong version for my Kindle, right? Who knows! I'm just happy to see my custom screensavers again.

@kabaczek124: Dropping a blank ENABLE_HACK_UPDATES file in the root of your Kindle should make official updates fail with a U007 error.

Well, we - my local forum guys - have some problem with Asian fonts. CJK produces some error with converted documents in Asian encoding. Lots of rendering errors. (blank screen, blank fonts, not just blank square but total blankness) Some of us are trying to replace CJK.ttf with their own build, and some just drop CJK entirely and go for stock font file mapping with replaced glyphs.

This is 3.1 specific. 3.0.x doesn't have this kind of trouble. Something has changed, less tolerant to large font files maybe.
