I damaged my kindle pw when my computer crashed while the kindle was plugged in. After that the kindle would begin to load up and then get stuck on 'error code: 2'. I called Amazon support and was told that it could not be repaired.
The factory reset advice given here worked perfectly! Thank you very much OP. I'm pretty disgusted with Amazon and it's so-called support. |

Repair Needed. Your kindle needs repair.
Hi. I have the same problem and Amazon just told me to buy another one at a discount. I am very upset. Anyway, I am trying your solution but I am not sure how to create the empty file. I have windows 8. Is it a text file? I really need to rescue my Kindle, I am a student and I cant afford to lose 180 dollars. I hate amazon now, my Kindle is past the warranty but it is like new and just stopped working.Thanks.

Just create a "new text document", but make sure it does not have a file extension.
You will need to set Windows Explorer to show file extensions, or it will automatically be created with a .txt file extension. |

Have a PW1 5.6.1.1 rooted and it's acting funky I screwed it up somehow.. If I do this it factory resets it back to 5.6.1.1 clean install and no root? I'm trying to basically reformat mine back to default but I don't want to lose root.

It operates the same as "Reset to Factory Defaults".
The jailbreak *should* preserve itself through a Reset, but on fw>=5.6.1 you will need to give it a helping hand. See the jailbreak thread for more details. Particularly, the Important Notice Regarding Jailbreak Updates. |

If you messed that up, it will stay messed up. It will clear out the preferences and settings stored in /var/local along with everything in the visible USB storage. |
